2014 GL450 93k miles, keep it?

I have a 2014 GL450 that has $93k miles on it. It's been a pretty good car but since the CPO Warranty ran out last year, I've had to replace one of the rear airmatic suspension pieces, and had to replace the fuel pump. It's nearing time for another service where I will most likely need new tires, I also have a bad clunk coming from the front left shock area. I've been considering getting something else soon but was really wanting to wait a year. Is it worth to dump a bunch more money into this for 1 more year or should I just trade it in on a new GLS580 or X7 M50i?

Sell or trade now - before 100K mark - nothing to be gained, only to go down another chunk..

I have the same car, CPO warranty also ran out last year. I had my first real issue in the four years I've had it recently which was an ill timed coolant leak. I took the opportunity to find a local independent instead of using the dealer. Fixing problems as they come up is a pain since it is almost guaranteed to be disruptive, but still much cheaper than buying a new vehicle. It comes down to how much piece of mind and a newer, better ride are worth to you. If I was looking to replace I'd probably wait for the CPO market on the X7 or new GLS to develop.

My GL was more reliable as time went on. Everything that was going to break did so in the first 100k miles. The second 100k miles was very cheap to operate. Only the usual tires and Airmatic springs needed replacement. I would not hesitate to own past 100k miles and if it got costly to own I would get rid of it.

Wow, you kept it 200k miles. Do you still own it? If not, what did you get for it?

It's got 250k+ miles. Yes, still drive it daily and yes I have the clunk in the drivers side too. Have never been able to solve the clunk. It only makes noise at low speeds on rough roads.

That's awesome that you got past over 200K. I was debating to see if we would keep the GL past the first 100k since reliability was a concern.

I agree with you, the 1st 50K, we have seen a lot of issues related to A/C, door locks, and air compressor issues. Other than those set of issues the GL has been pretty rock solid. I wonder how many folks here have kept their GL past the 100K. Blown V8, I think you're the 1st runner up with the highest mileage X166 GL. Based on your name tag, have you done a ECU on your GL? If so, how many miles\years ago was that?

My 450 is a 164 but I know the bi-turbo engine will be even better than the NA engine. There were some issues with the NA engine in the early 450's that even mine suffers from but it has still performed well. I have a 166 GL63 with close to 90k miles. No tune. There is a guy on the GL/GLS 63 section that had 277k on his 63 and it was still running great when he traded it on a new GLE63.

What year is your 450? I heard otherwise, the X164 engine is more reliable since it doesn't have the turbos and makes much less heat and doesn't burn up oil as the X166.

My GL63 doesn't burn oil. My 164 is a 2007. I like the bi-turbo engine much better than the NA engine. It's got more power and can have even more power with just a tune. There is no reason you won't get even more mileage out of the 166 bi-turbo engine since it does not have the fatal flaw of the balance shaft issue that my 164 has.

All of the engines equipped in GLs have some issues here and there. X164 chasis was equipped with the M273 which was known to have the balance shaft flaw, but the problem only applies to early models up to around 08-09. The facelifted X164 was quite reliable. The M278 equipped on X166 also suffered from cyliner liner problem but it's not something everyone gets or will get. Some say it's a manufacture problem only happened on a small number of the population but some say it's an engineering issue that's going to happen sooner or later. The diesel version OM642 also have oil cooler seal, EGR, timing chain issues as well but it's also year dependent.

Did you say the 166 burns oil?

we’ve been getting check engine oil and next fill up every few weeks. Never seen an oil drop under the truck. The first one was right after an oil change. Topped it off. A few weeks later again. And now today.

Same Boat ... got about 1 month left on my ELW ... gonna do my best to beat the dealer of the head for my 2013 GL450 trade in and rake them over the coals somehow (lol) on a 2017 GLS that is CPO ... then the X7, been itching to get back to a bimmer (but looking at the 7-Series, loved mine for 5 years before my GL) ... ANYONE with insights as to BMW's CPO and ability to buy ELW like Mercedes? thanks

I also have a 2014GL that has 66K miles on it that i have owned for 3 years. It was a CPO vehicle, but my warranty has run out. I have recently been hit with my first set of major repairs (approx 3K for the work- suspension links and rear shocks) that i am contemplating whether to actually fix or try to trade the car in. KBB on the truck is 15K and I am definitely underwater with the loan.

Is this the beginning of more bigger problems that are to come or should i bite the bullet and roll myself debt included into a 2017? At a crossroads. Any help/suggestions welcome.

Also, is this how quickly the value of these trucks drops in just 6 years?

Yup, SUVs depreciate quickly.

I'll bet that all the likely repairs for your 2014 in the next five years will be less than the cost of trading for a 2017, and that's not even counting the depreciation and maintenance expenses for a 2017.

$3k for rear shocks and suspension links is criminal. What exactly is wrong with your suspension links? When you say shocks do you mean airbags or do you mean shocks? With or without ADS?

Soon to be 2013 GL450
Just chiming in, 2013 x166 here with 116K. It's been out of warranty for a few years now. Still pretty good vehicle, the key to after warranty is trustworthy and good mechanic (no dealership). But overall I haven't had anything out line. Agreed that $3k for rear air suspension is rough, but my only real complaints are that it burns through tires before 30k, the plastic paint is peeling from the steering wheel/window buttons, and I don't think my rear passenger side door actually locks (wth?) .... otherwise really drives about the same and I like it. I do have the clunk mentioned in the front at lower speeds, it's on my list for next years trip to the mechanic. Below are what I'm paying for keeping it up, ~$2k per year which includes tires. The way I see it, saving about $7-8K for every year I keep it vs replacing with newer GL, X7, or Q7. One of those will likely be the replacement, probably 2021 or 2022 depending on how I feel at the time and will likely wait for low mileage lease return of the 2020's....
  • Tires every other year - $1100
  • Oil / Filters - $100 (every 10k)
  • Brakes - $300 (every 30k)
  • Battery - $100 (at 90k did it myself)
  • Rear air replacement - $1100 (85k miles)
  • Transmission fluid - $300 (at 110k)
  • Air pump - $700 (at 110k)

You can buy the shocks online for about $80 each delivered. Labor will be around $150/side at an independent. Not sure why you would need suspension links but I say take it somewhere else.

MB branded OEM suspension parts are insanely expensive for no reason. Go with FCP Euro on suspension components. $200.00 vs $800.00 for a lower control arm.

Never seen them fail on a GL. Just get the shocks done. I seriously don't think the links are bad. Have the shocks done and if it feels like the ride is unstable then get the links. 99.999999% likely it's just the rear shocks.
