Tires: Anyone getting more than 20k miles?

I just replaced 4 Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 that got about 18k miles before they were toast. Did my rotations and a couple of alignments in the 18 months the tires were on the wagon. Discount Tire gave a credit back towards another set, went with the Continental ControlContact Sport SRS, which is a tire made exclusively for Discount Tire.

I've got a 2013 GL550 with the 21" AMG wheels. I know many have complained about tire wear. I'm glad there was some credit coming back to me...but it seems nuts that our tires wear out so quick. My new tires also come with 50k warranty and they tell me at DT that these will wear better...but I'm not holding my breath.

Any one having better luck?

Put over 21k since I bought the suv, tires will need replaced soon but I don’t know how long they’ve been there.

so yes it’s possible to get over 20k on tires.

Just passed 20k on my '14 GL450. Michelin Premier LTX. 30% highway and 70% around town. They've got at least another 5k and maybe more that.

21" tires for the GL550 used to be limited to less than a handful of kinds..nowadays there's lots more offerings, but most I've found are of generic brands.
My previous set was the DWS06 (I think I got about 22-24k miles out of them, with bald patch along inside shoulder) which was better overall compared to the Perelli Scorpion which sucks (think I got 16k miles, stiff ride and hydroplaned easily even when brand new). It still hydroplaned, not as scary as the Scorpion, but still often even when new.
Currently I'm running Yokohama Geolandar X-CV and it's the best so far. Great handling, low tire noise, great wet grip (starting to hydroplane a little going 65-70 through a heavy downpour) after 11k miles, none prior. I'm going to see how many miles these will offer, but so far it looks promising that it will surpass the DWS06.

Fronts last a long time, 30k or more, but the rears need replacement every 10 to 15k miles in my GL63. I could rotate but that would be more effort than it is worth

I replaced my Mich LTX about 6 months ago just shy of 40k on them. I don’t rotate but they all wore pretty evenly. Much better than the 25k stock conti’s, so I stayed with them again.

15 GL550; 13 GL450 (sold)
I've had the 21" AMG setup on both the current '15 GL550 and the prior '13 GL450, and here's what I've learned:
  • 36 psi all around seems to produce the best, even tread wear here in central TX
  • Low-profile, performance rubber + nearly 3 tons = rapid tire wear
  • Conti ExtremeContact DWS06 didn't make it through 13K miles, even with 2X rotations; got a treadwear refund on that one
  • Conti CrossContact UHP fared a little better, but zero treadwear warranty
  • Pirelli Scorpion Zero All-Season Plus did the best, with 4-5/32 even treadwear after 21K miles and regular rotations (then GL450 was sold)
  • I decided to try the Yokohama Geolandar XC-V this time out to see if I could best the Scorpions for a little less $$. They, too, have 50K treadwear warranty.
  • All tires purchased thru Tire Rack and shipped to and installed at a neighborhood Firestone store with lifetime rotation.
  • Got lifetime alignment as well and check that regularly, since this vehicle eats through rubber more than any other consumable.

MB GL450
I have a Gl450 with 20 inch wheels. My OEM Pirelli got 25k miles. Replaced them with Premier LTX and got 48k miles out of them. I have conti LX25 on the GL now. They seem to be wearing well and have 80k treadwear warranty. I run 37psi all around

I got 11k miles out of my Conti UHP's with rotations every 3k miles. They were all down to 3 mm and needed changing. Now I'm running these and they handle better in the dry, rain, and are quieter than the Conti's. 1/3 the price too.

It probably is a good performance tire (especially considering price) as evidenced by many Challenger RTs owners' reviews, but it is extremely unlikely to get even 10K on these heavy vehicles. No performance tire lasts much more than 8-10K miles on X166/W166 platform. It is generally a bad idea to wait until 2/32 (3mm) to change tires - at this depth tires offer no hydroplaning resistance and are very loud. I change tires with not less than 5/32. Let us know how these feel when at 2/32. Still at the price point and based on reasonable safety profile (at least on RTs) it is a no brainer. I will look into these when need replacement. Thanks for pointing to them.

Wear bars are 2 MM. I changed them out at 3 MM as soon as I took my winter wheel/tire package off for the season. The Conti UHP's were never good in the rain even when they were brand new. And they became downright slippery like hockey pucks when temps dipped below 40 even on dry roads. The Atturo's have been fantastic so far and I get less tire spin, even on wet roads. It's funny that a tire at 1/3 the price is actually safer and quieter than the ridiculously expensive ones. I'm not expecting more than 10-11k miles out of these. But at 1/3 the price, who cares.

I have 20's, not 21's, but I got 28,000 miles on my last set of OEM Bridgestone Dueler Run-flats.

I replaced with 20" Bridgestone Revo 3s and the ride is nicer and I've put about 5,000 miles on them with hardly any wear.

Took the car with 21" AMG setup to balance the wheels after the winter months and at 10k miles on the rears, the tire place recommended to have them replaced. Since it's an AWD, it's better to replace all 4.

Hadn't rotated them because it affects the handling so it's time to get a new set.

Not from my experience. Works just fine if you replace the rears. I'm getting around three rears to every front set.

Premier LTX, my second set of tires, with 31,000 miles, plenty of wear left. Casual driving, rotate every 7500 mi, an excellent quiet tire. No problems at all.
i await patiently the Mercedes EQC 400, sometime in my lifetime.

I also tried the x-cv’s. Have 30,000 miles on them and should have replaced them a couple of thousand miles ago. Nothing left. I am going back to the Michelins. These were ok. No more miles than then Premiers. I am not as sensitive to the others here as far as noticing subtle changes between tires but to me the Michelins did give a better ride and better wet handling IMO.

My GL chews tires up! I bought the car with 7k miles...it now has 46k, and I've had to get 3 sets of tires in that time...

That’s way too little. I’ve been getting 25-27k per
set. Found out they no longer make the Michelin premiers in my 19” size so switched to Bridgestone Alenza for wet handling on Florida roads. We’ll see what I get from these.
