GL63 M157 about to take a sh*t?

I just performed an 80k oil change on my GL63 and noticed something stuck to the magnetic sump plug. It looked like grit, but was magnetic and about 1.5mm in size. I was able to crush it with the side of my pocketknife using quite a bit of force and it turned to powder.

This got me worried, so I filtered all of the used oil through a screen and there was no other magnetic fragments of this size to be found.

I then decided to cut open my oil filter element and inspect it. on the outside of the filter was maybe ten 0.5mm shiny metal pieces of glitter. Easily visible to the eye and recordable on camera.

The large chunk of metal is obviously a big worry, however I can only 80% confirm it was from the engine. I removed the plug and placed it on cardboard that I was laying on. Ther eis a very small chance it might have picked up something from there (but unlikely). The glitter fragments in the oil filter are undeniable though.

Do a blackstone analysis on the oil

hows the engine running, any codes? How old are the plugs?

Stupidly i filtered the used oil into a container with other motor oils, so I wont be able to send this out for analysis until I do another oil change.

Engine runs great, no codes, no odd noises. I do sometimes think i smell burning oil though, but never have any tailpipe smoke (even with the decat). Plugs have about 25k on them.

Turning to powder when crushed by hand seems to point to foreign material or wear particles. Doesn’t sound real concerning especially since you are not reporting other symptoms.

Definitive diagnosis for bore scoring is borescope. I think you can rent them at Autozone or equivalent. Early scoring may not present slap, smoke or oil consumption.

Do you have a modified intake system or aftermarket air filters?

I do have DNA stage 2 aftermarket air filters, but they are still in the OEM airboxes. Here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185128743...3ABFBMiNLV_5li

They have been on the car since I purchased it 6+ years ago. I've been cleaning them at every service interval, but noticed that at the most recent interval the filter material has started to degrade so I am replacing them with OEM.

So just to add, I've also started noticing higher oil consumption, an oil burning smell when accelerating hard and also little puffs of smoke between gear changes also on hard accel.

I'm going to have a 'virtual' compression test conducted tomorrow and hopefully this will give me an idea of the engine health.

I'm actually really gutted as the GL63 is my fave car (and I have a few!), but after reading lots of cylinder scoring horror stories, I dont think I could ever have another one.

Hopefully it’s not cylinder scoring

For your sake I'm hoping it checks out ok during the compression test. It is an awesome car and definitely worth repairing and driving for another 200k miles.

Borescope a couple cylinders. It’s not a huge job.

Well MB's Xentry diagnostic is blocked from compression testing AMG engines now it seems. Interesting move by MB...hmmm

So I pulled the plug on cyl5 (the troublesome one) and borescoped it. There is some scoring, although not awful, and I performed a compression test on this cylinder alone. It held 155psi.

At some point I'll get around to doing the rest, but for the moment at least I'm going to continue to drive it like I stole it.

Good feedback. Enjoy the car, and continue to monitor the symptoms.
