DME Stage 2 Tune With Stock Cats

Hey guys, I’ve been running DMEs Stage 2 tune for awhile now on stock cats. The car runs great but am I doing the engine harm by not freeing up the exhaust flow? I’ve been thinking about getting 300 cell cat downpipes from Redstar. I’ve been noticing a slight jerk before I get into boost and add throttle. Could it possibly that I need colder plugs or could it be that my cats are restricting the engine too much? My oil temps don’t go higher than 221F during spirited driving. Car has 21k miles.

It's always a good idea to free up the exhaust when running modifications. I would do downpipes and higher flow cats with stage 2 tune. You will see additional hp and the engine should run a little cooler. Would not change the plugs unless the person installing is good at indexing the plugs. Where the plug rests in the cylinder head really matters in these engines and there have been some failed engines that were not properly indexed and used non-MB plugs.

What about the Weistec Spark plugs? 1 step colder. Do you know the proper plug gapping for the M157? Thanks for the help!

Get with the tuner on the gap or Weistec's recommendations but I'd imagine they will come pre-gapped but you may want to check for accuracy, Indexing is even more important.

What do you mean by indexing?

Thank you! Now I’m worried about getting the NGK plugs. Might just replace them with the stock ones.

100% do NOT get any aftermarket spark plugs.

I spoke with my Master MB tech about this in detail. The spark plug is indexed (must face a certain way) and if the tech senses any damage to the plug or is dropped, he will throw it away and use a fresh one.

Even if you call Renntech who used to recommend different spark plugs, now has gone back and recommends OEM spark plugs.

Weistec still recommends different spark plugs.

I also run a 91 octane tune - the difference in HP for a 93 octane tune is non-material and in case you ever run into a situation of not having 93 or getting bad fuel - just protects your engine from knock.

Use OEM spark plugs and change them every 30k miles for tuned cars if you want to play it safe.

Oh and this is controversial - I see you have BMC Air Filters. My MB Master tech also told me these do allow more airflow but also allow more debris to get into the engine. The HP gains are at top end and high hp application and not worth it.

He has also seen a case of the filter deteriorating and getting into the engine and ruining it.

I'm not going to risk and and sticking with stock. If I were to change filters, I'd use the Blackboost which I believe uses BMC, but I'd get that just for the sound=)

I doubt you'll run into issues, but just sharing.
