Winter tires for 23” wheels

I have been reading several threads on winter tires, but none comment on the 23”. Of course they come with the performance summer tires. I live in the Midwest where it’s consistently below 40F.

There are no exact size matches for any all season or winter tires.

Will the pirelli scorpion winter 2s work with these? The tread width is a little wide but only by 5mm. Could cause clearance issues, but seems minimal. Anyone have any experience? I’d love not to have to buy an extra set of rims with winter tires.

thanks in advance.

I am going through the same thing, and am just about resigned to buying a winter set of wheels and tires (either 21" or 22"). Can anyone here share what you've purchased for winter? Tire rack options are reasonable, but also maybe not the quality I'd be ideally looking for. Not trying to hijack the original question, but I've come up emptyhanded for months now asking the same question the OP has here.

Not a hijack at all. I am revisiting this right now as it’s time to switch and I haven’t purchased yet. There was a phone number for a guy at tirerack from years ago. He still works there and was helpful. He recommended 20” all square. I have to check again, as that’s not recommended if you have the high performance ceramic brakes. He likes the additional clearance to protect from potholes.

You can get car specific 22” wheels that look decent and then the pirelli scorpion winters. That’s the safest/closest OM. But AS works just fine apparently. I’ll let you all know what I settle on but open to hearing options.

If 20" wheels clear your brake calipers, you'll be happiest with this dimension because of the selection, price and availability in snow tires. Winter brings pavement potholes and ice potholes in parking lots, and the extra sidewall buys some added protection. And having a set of wheels + tires for winter is better than flipping tires twice a year on a single set of wheels.

Update:

I went with MSW type 74 20x9” with all square 20” Michelin X-Ice Snow 275/55R-20. All in about $2800 with TPMS. They look nice and clear calipers. Spacers not needed but would help appearance (5-10 front and 25 or so in back). But diameter is within 1/10”, so no AWD or speed/odometer problems.

How did 20 x 9s work for you throughout the season? Any issues?

Worked great. A little floatie feeling on the drive, but managed snow and ice super well. Looked fine. No need to get spacers IMO. Having belle tire do concierge storage for minimal hassle. Worth the $100.

I have the 23" forged rims which I really like. Needed winter tires so I went with 22" AMG knock off wheels with the rear rims larger like the OEM sizes. Pirelli Winter tires. The rims are from eBay cost 1495 for the set. Great build quality. My dealer was shokced they were not OEM.

Hi, new GLS 580 owner here with 23" wheels. Just learning about difficulties of getting all-season/winter tires for my car :-(.
Has anybody here actually tried putting the Pirelli Winter 2 in size: 285/35/23 and 325/30/23? Any reports?

@losy Mind sharing which ebay rims you got? I like the look and if 23" winter tires is not an option I might go your route.

I purchased a square set from Tirerack. They were 22x9 Michelin X-Ice Snow on Asanti Black Label ABL-27 for my 21 GLS63. I have to say, this thing is now unstoppable in the snow. I drove through a horrendous snow storm last February from Reno to Laguna Seca across the Sierras. I damn near set the cruise even though it was a full on blizzard with nearly a foot of snow on the road. Amazing combination!
