2016 GL63 DTC P01B5

Brand new member here. I recently bought a 2016 GL63 and love it. A few days ago I got a check engine light and the DTC is P01B5 (Alternate Fuel Rail Temperature Sensor Performance). I don't notice any change at all with the car and the gas mileage hasn't suffered. I am not able to find any information about this code online.

So, I'm already asking for help. Have any of you experienced this code? Does anyone have any information on why it gets set and how to diagnose and fix the problem? I don't even know what an Alternate Fuel Rail might be or where this temperature sensor is located. I'm guessing that fuel temperature might be used as an input among many other things to calculate fuel injector durations but that is purely a guess.

If anyone could help me out with some information or tell me where to go to get it, I will be very grateful.

Thanks,
Ron

Disappointing response..

Hello Ron, first let me say I cannot help with your question... Just wanted to let you know I am new to this forum also, and also just recently purchased a 2016 LG63 AMG. So perhaps along the way we can share our happiness and frustrations.
This is my first MB, and first vehicle with this level of sophistication and complexity. I love it, but also made my first mistake at purchase... I couldn't resist the condition and low mileage for a 2016, so ignored the fact that it didnt have a tow package even though that was definitely something I wanted.
Told myself it is probably not a big deal, just get the parts and bolt them in and connect the wire harness up..............wrong............ my first mistake.
Anyway, that is why I am hear as I am going through the painful process of getting the OEM tow package in, and going to pay dearly for it.
Anyway, wish I could help with the code.
I found many links, but guessing you already have the full OBD2 code list, but that doesnt help in fixing the problem.
Did some searching, maybe this video will help some, even though they are not GL63 AMG.. or GL...
Not sure where the fuel rail is either and where sensor is, but probably just replace it.
Hope it is a simple and low cost fix.
Mike

Not familiar with this code or sensor. Have you tried clearing the code then see if it returns?

This sensor is mentioned in the M157 intro doc from Mercedes, apparently it sits on the right rail (page 32)

Funinthesun, thanks for the introduction. I need all the help I can get. This is my first Mercedes as well and love the car but will have a big learning curve when working on it. I would have thought the trailer hitch would be a simple add as well. Luckilly, mine already had one from the factory! Look at the post below yours from jcars. He included some great information on our engine.

Jcars, wow, thanks for the link. What a great summary on our engine! I am printing it out and will reference it many times in the future. I did reset the code and it hasn't returned. It was set in heavy rain and it never reset on its own after 500+ miles and multiple start cycles. So, I guess I will just wait and see if it comes back. Thanks to you, I now know where the sensor is. Thanks again for that.

That video is of an old inline six diesel. The reason your scan tool comes up with that code is aftermarket and generic. That fault code should read fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor. I'd clear it see if it comes back. I've seen them go bad every now and then, usually there are other codes when that one is present that help lead to the real source of failure.

Road, are you saying that the P01B5 is wrong or the description is wrong? I reset the code around a month ago and it hasn't returned. When the code set, I was in a huge rain storm if that makes any difference. The drivability of the car didn't change at all.

So, this code does point to the temperature and pressure sensor on the right, high pressure fuel rail? Thanks to Jcars, I know where that is at least. I'm guessing that this code isn't going to tell me whether the fault was pressure OR temperature related.

Thanks very much for the response. First Mercedes but I am learning.

yes your computer or code reader gave a different description since its just a generic code. You need the factory scan tool to get more information. If it hasn't popped back on I wouldn't worry about it. However if you want to do some digging, disconnect your camshaft position sensors and engine control unit connectors. Inspect them for oil. These engines are notorious for oil contamination wicking into the harness and throwing readings off.

Thanks for the information and help. I appreciate it and need it!

What scanner would you recommend?

Since you are new to Mercedes, you need to make sure you have a Mercedes-specific scan tool. Generic OBD scanners are a waste of money when it comes to Mercedes, and worse, they can be misleading. The ultimate diagnostic tool is the Star Diagnosis System (SDS) which is often referred to as XENTRY. XENTRY is the software component of SDS. The other two parts are a Windows laptop and a C4 Multiplexer which is the interface between the car and the laptop. The best source is www.benzninja.com or info@benzninja.com.

XENTRY is more than just a scanner, it is a complete diagnostic tool with guided diagnostics procedures. And with the kit from BenzNinja you get his diagnostic support through a remote connection.

Thanks very much Jetta. I looked at the offering by BenzNinja and it sure seems like a premium service. I will probably go with that.
