Spare tire - what size?

Just bought an MB Certified '18 GLA250 with four brand new Continental runflat tires. Being a little uncertain about their actual runflat capability, I'd like to have a basic spare tire in the trunk. My question: Any recommendations as to a suitable wheel/tire setup? Thanks.

There are different options. One is to get an inflatable tire. Another is to get a spare donut from eBay, deflate it and try to stick it in the space. Deflating will reduce the radius to fit in. You can then inflate it with a small air pump when needed. I have not tried it but the information is based on what I have read over the internet. I also have 2021 GLA 250 will test what I mentioned above. First I will try the donut tire and deflate it first and will check if I can fit it in. Hope this helps

I recently bought my 18 GLA 250 and it also has Continental run-flats. Lo and behold I got a flat the very next day! And yes, they work perfectly fine. Your TMS will read 0 but the tire will remain inflated u til you get it fixed (and yes, they CAN be fixed).

I ditched the run-flats, so I needed a spare. I pieced together a full MB kit from eBay by figuring out what I could use from what other models. I explained my process on this thread in the GLAOwners forum.

Good luck!

I went for the modernspare option for my GLB, but it takes a good space in the trunk:
https://modernspare.com/product/2020...e-kit-options/

You can check if you can fit a small donut under the trunk. Mine has a Burmester amplifier... GLK350 has a small donut which fit into the space. You have to inflate to use and deflate to fit back...

I’ve been looking at Modern Spare website. Very cool. I will buy this if I go non runflats , at least for our GLC. I am putting non runflats winter tires on my E, but gonna try tire sealer first and a small compressor from Griot.

After all my research now I think the only way is not to go outside town with runflat. I use it only for daily commute for the long drives and out of state with family I have GLE 350 with spare tire. My sis bought two Tesla 3 and Y both have run flat. looks like all cars are coming with run-flat. That's why I want to keep GLE 350 as long as I could. I have new 2021 GLA 250 and no space at all in the tinny trunk. So I keep flat tire mending kit and small electric air pump in case if run-flat fails at least I can plug it and inflate it till I reach home or to the nearest tire shop.

Runflats are horrible but I don't think there is a choice as there is no room in my GLA for a spare. Heck there is no room in the glovebox for the owners manual.

I gave up and put regular tires on my wife's GLA with pump and can of fix-a-flat. If she has a flat, she calls me.

If you have half worn tires and one tire loses air and you drive for one mile, you will have to replace all four tires. Runflats cannot be saved once they have run flat at all. the sidewalls are too damaged. An with four wheel drive, you can't run a tire with a different diameter or you will damage the differentials.

Run flats can be repaired, depends on the manufacturer and where the puncture is located, how far it was driven, if it was completely flat, etc.

Run flat tires work okay because the side wall is pretty sturdy.

However, instead of the spare tire idea, I suggest buy
a tire inflator pump.
Amazon Amazon

and optional repair kit (if you're a handy man)
Amazon Amazon

mostly you will have slow leaking tire, then you can just put some air for 5~10 minutes,
then can drive to home or a repair shop, 10 ~20 minutes driving can be easy.
You can even drive longer if you put more air in the middle.

I don't like to jack up the car, spin the 5 lug bolts and replace the tire in the road side.
It takes much effort and longer time.(30 minutes) and risk to be hit by other vehicles.

I replaced the OEM run flat tires to the regulars for smooth driving, then I keep those items in my trunk.
No spare tire.
