I hated did the runflat tires that came with the vehicle. I replaced them with Michelin premier LTX tires. I also made sure the spare wheel fit the car and cleared the brake calipers on the front. You do have to lug bolts for the spare wheel, got those at Pep Boys .

The whole quality of the ride has improved with the Michelin tires, but I guess I should post that in a different thread.

I ended up getting the same spare, jack and shorter lug nuts a while back off of Ebay. Kind of interesting that I selected the same tires as well after dwelling over all the options on Tire Rack. How are you liking the tires now that you have some mileage on them?

I actually love the Michelin's. They are quieter, smoother and handle the bumps better as well.

What i want to see, is how it can be fitted under the floor board.

Attention it's R17 (17 ") = 6B X 17H2 for the GLC it's very often the R19 (19") = 4B X18H2 ET40

The only one I've found states used, and doesn't tell if it's been stored with air or compressed. I'm also leery about getting something that's been compressed like this since 2012 and then relying on it. THanks!

I have tried to get the OEM spare, no luck in USA. So I opted to go with "normal" tires, Michelin Defender LTX. After 5k miles I am extremely happy, the tire is very quiet at highway speed, good traction in the wet and dry. After 5k the wear is negligible. My OEM Pirellis lasted jus 17k miles. So I am happy.
As an insurance I have AAA membership, given the popularity of Michelin tires I am sure I can get replacement everywhere. And towing will be free!

I've had multiple sidewall fractures driving around Chicago. Last time, MB roadside took 6 hours to tow me. So this is not even an option in my opinion anymore. I just need to know if the above GLK tire is legit and will work, ideally from where. Here are the part numbers I found. The first is from threads, the second is from a brochure from the UK for our actual 2018 models. The spare wheel, for the 2018 seems huge and in this thread has been debated on proper stowage, so I'd prefer that collapsable one, but it has to be new. Something that sits uncompressed for years cannot be relied upon.

A1665800400 -- from GLC brochure

peet,
I understand you. Waiting 6 hours for a service is completely unacceptable! I tried to purchase to correct, collapsible spare tire, I even went to the dealer, they located the part number and...........they cannot sell it to me! It is only available in Europe! I work for German company and frequently travel to Europe, I could purchase spare there and also my friends could do it for me. My issue is shipping cost.

Anyway, any local (USA) solution would be welcomed!

As I said I am taking risk riding on Michelin Defenders (not run-flat tires) and I am very happy. Ride is much better, noise not existent and traction and handling is exceptional.
Though still I would like to have a spare of some sort.....so any suggestions would be more than welcome....

So much for all those claims that RFT won't leave you stranded!

Don't even get me started. The issue with RFT is there are two types... one has an insert and you can drive on it with a sidewall damage to some degree. This is becoming very rare and in place are the MOE (extended mobility) tires. These only have stiffer sidewalls and therefore if you bust a sidewall, too bad fo r you.

I tried to attach images - if it works, one is the pothole I hit with a credit card sized card for scale, the other is the damage. This plus that = 6 hour wait.

Ironically, I went into dealer to order the GLE spare (a1644000002) ... it's a current item! dealer wanted $450, got online for just over $300... where the irony comes from is that the same dealer sold it online that would have sold it in the store LOL. Fingers crossed it gets here soon. I'll confirm fitment and re-share to this thread.

Hi peet,
this sounds like and interesting news. If this tire works for you I will definitely get is as well.
I just spoke with my friend from Germany, he has GLC250 and will check the pricing and shipping cost for me. But I would prefer to buy it locally. Let see how it transpires.

Will report back. Frankly I was freaked out about this spare being too small for our car, but in the parts list it shows as standard for current year GLE and GLS! So if it can hold up those tanks, sure as heck should hold ours up. Fitment TBD, I also couldn't tell if the different bolts come with based on the order page, so two things to check when it comes.

Update: Bought this wheel 164-400-00-02

It came but is a bare wheel. No lugs, no tire. Now what? Did anyone else go this route? It looks similar to the first pics on this thread and can probably take a donut... but what size tire and type to get to put on it? I suspect that will be more reliable than the one that stays compressed until needed.

Thanks!

So it has been over a year. How are the Michelin tires doing? I am going to do the same as you did as soon as I locate the tire and tools. My Pirelli on a 2017 GLC300 are getting to the hazardous stage with 14K miles. I do not, and will never have, a run flat again. Looking at Michelin and also looking for a quieter tire.

The Michelins have been great; smooth and quiet as expected. Wearing evenly, no complaints whatsoever

Anyone have the actual part number for the bolts that go with the GLE wheel (wheel part: 164-400-00-02) .... dealer said bolts are 220 400 01 70 ... but pulling that up shows "Lock screw." on the ordering site. While that may be correct, there is no picture, no count (are there 5? or is that for one?). My tire is being mounted onto the spare Monday, but I just realized I still have no bolts.

Many thanks all!
