Towing a boat with GLC300
Thinking about getting a boat and wonder if 2019 GLC300 can handle it:
Boat 1 weight with trailer: 3875 lbs
Boat 2 weight with trailer: 2950 lbs
In the manual it states that GLC300 can tow 3500 lbs, do you think getting boat 1 (preferred choice since it's bigger) will be too much for glc300? I most likely will be adding CURT 13290 Class 3 Trailer Hitch. Would getting boat 2 weight wise be a smarter decision? Does anybody tow anything over the set limit ?
Thank you for your comments.
I tow a boat with a dry weight of approx 1600kg with my GLC 250 which when fueled and loaded is approx 1850kg. The GLC tows this load without any difficulties.
The main rule when towing is that the trailer weight ideally should not exceed the vehicle weight. This avoids the tail wagging the dog or a tank slapper.
The Westfalia tow bars that Mercedes supply in Australia are best avoided and I consider it the worst feature on our vehicle. The chain attachment points are too far under the car and too close together.
Dependant on your location you also need to consider the maximum drawbar weight. The GLC has a low 100kg maximum drawbar weight. This is based on the European standards where the drawbar weight is approx 5% of the trailer weight. In Australia, we follow the North American standards for trailers where the drawbar weight can be up to 10% of the trailer weight.
You might want to restate your last question, not sure you'll have a lot of people admit to doing something as stupid as blindly ignoring a maximum towing capacity.
