What else did you consider ????

Looking for a new smallish SUV and leaning towards the GLC. For those who recently purchased what all did you consider and why did you choose what you did? My must have is Adaptive Cruise and Lane Keep Assist, under $60K. I've looked at the following:

GLC 300 - nothing to dislike, maybe on the smaller side. Love the 2020, not a fan of the infotainment on the 2019.
Q5 - looks dated both inside and out
RR Velar - love everything about it except $$$ (would have to buy used) and reliability scares me.
X3 - just don't like bmw, can't put a finger on it (looks cheapish maybe)
RDX - nothing to dislike either, best sound system, like the interior, fun to drive. Not great wheel/tire choices

For my wife, it was the other way around. She shopped Lexus NX and RX, M-B GLC and BMW X3. She went with the G01 X3 because the Lexus was too daffy and the Benz was too stoic.

The X3 has been a great vehicle in the 6 months we have owned it. Far sportier than the Lexus and M-B; all base models being compared. iDrive is miles ahead of COMAND, I don't have experience to compare vs MBUX.

2020 GLC 300
The 2020 GLC with the extra power and all the upgrades made it much better for us all the way around over the X3. I was surprised that the GLC felt even sportier than the X3. I really don't like the BMW world either, so I am glad my wife wanted the GLC over the X3. The interior definitely has a much higher quality feel than the X3. The X3 reminded me of a Kia in terms of how quality the interior felt and the way it drove.

I sat in a 2019 GLC and wasn't impressed. The 2020 with bigger center display, the digital dashboard, cleanness of the center console is so much nicer and is at the top of the list.

I like the "stance" of the GLC better than the X3, GLC looks wider at the bottom/wheel base.

We first looked at the BMW X5 and liked it----but the salesman was a real JERK! I asked how difficult it would be for me to change my own oil and he replied "BMW owners never do any maintenance on their car and let our professional employees do it" in a very snobbish tone. We left and never looked back!

Checked Audi, Volvo, BMW, Acura. The next was GLC300 - during the test drive immediate reaction was "That's it!"

Rationale: There is something in the ride comfort, interior and exterior look and feel - all of this combined made it rise above the crowd for my wife!

I test drove the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Cadillac XT4, Acura RDX.

5. Acura RDX had the most space and good features. For me the seats were the least comfortable. Cabin didnt feel as cozy and luxurious.

4. Cadillac XT4. Comfortable and safe. Good features. Was not exciting or real fun to drive.

3. Audi Q5. Good performance. Drive somewhat stiff. Very open, sturdy, and spacious.

2. X3 - Good seats, great performance. Excellent drive and technology.

1. GlC 300 - most comfortable seats, cozy yet spacious cabin. Best mix of performance, luxury, technology, and comfort

wow, impressive review
almost like coming from consumer reports

caveat on comfortable seats: true for leather seats, as mbtex is slightly worse

I test drove all these cars over the course of a day except the BMW which was a few days later. Many areas dealerships are all in the same area. This was about 2weeks ago so it was fresh in my mind. A family member has a 19 lexus Rx350 which I drove but did not include in my assessment.

I sat in MBtex for my drive and leather in showroom. The material is important and overall ergonomics of the seat. In the Mercedes and BMW felt like the seats contoured more to my body making the overall driving experience more comfortable. The Acura felt like I was at a friends house sitting in his favorite spot on the couch. It just didn't feel comfortable for me.

GLC300 (mine) GLK250 (wife's)
US News is a pretty good source of info as they accumulate assessments from a number (9 or 10 I think) of sources and include crash test and reliability data. Their 2019 ranking for compact luxury SUVs was:
1 GLC
2 Porsche Macan
3 RDX
4 Q5
5 X3
6 Jag FPace
7 Volvo XC60
then another 7 or 8

Their biggest criticism of the GLC was the infotainment system but as you noted, this has been improved for 2020.

My wife was set on getting a X3 without looking at any other competitors, but that right there is what sent us to Audi and Mercedes. BMW lost a sale by just being BMW. Glad they did that or we would be in an inferior vehicle right now.

Drove the rdx and liked it. Then drove the GLC and loved it! And we are an Acura/Infiniti family. I thought the rdx beat the GLC in size, but the GLC was more comfortable and finishes didn’t compare. also liked the drive so much better, I thought the rdx was jerky and loud even though it had good power and it struggled when I stepped on the gas trying to get from 40-60 fast. I wound up ordering a 2020 GLC with the options that were important to me and price will be pretty similar to rdx with tech package.

I agree. The Acura RDX actually pumps in fake engine noise through the sound system. I drove the RDX right before I drove the GLC and could tell the difference.

I've owned 4 BMWs and currently on my 3rd Audi, so wanted something different. Considered Macan, but Porsche pricing structure is just prohibitive. Japanese competition is either unattractive or mechanically challenged.

Well, only you know the answer to this question. There is no "one size fits all' as buying the car is personal preference (A), and preference changes over time (B). And few other reasons people mentioned, like sales guy being a jerk.....

My advice is to follow good examples on this thread: go out, take long test drive (not just sitting in the show room "maneken car")), keep notes and make a rank list, sleep it over... and you are done!

Its a lot easier now. I actually used video on my phone and had each saleperson going over the features for later review.

Don't agree the Q5 looks dated inside and out - especially when the GLC hasn't had a significant styling refresh since introduction. Even with the MBUX upgrade the interior is basically the same and is behind the latest interior of other MB models. However after my exhaustive search I concluded that while the GLC 300 is very attractive and comfortable, it in no way compares to the drive of the Q5 or X3. The GLC 300 is true to Mercedes where it emphasizes the comfort of the drive vs sportiness. BMW is all about sportiness and the Q5 is in between. So decide what is most important to you and go from there.

coming from 3 straight audis with 2 of them being S models I knew I wouldnt like the glc or anything else as a base model. audi has become boring to me and some of the electronics are wonky. also hate the fact that they severely limit you in the color of leather you can get if you want perforated seats. and for those who just have to chime in with ignorance the nappa leather is great in audis but it gets really old in 90 plus heat and having your back and *** be overheated. mbux was the icing on the cake since the virtual cockpit looks and performs great in a void but comparatively its been outperformed by mbux. the glc 43 I drove was a 19 model and I was pleasantly surprised at the comfort given the 21 inch wheels. pretty much the same comfort level as my current S5 sportback but with the added practicality of the larger cargo area. it seems to be the best compromise especially for someone who hates suvs and who would have bought a TTS is logic didnt prevail. the 43 I ordered is fairly well loaded so I wont miss much and I got the 20 inch wheels instead of the 21 inchers which to be fair do look great in some variants. brilliant blue with saddle brown which was also a compromise since the silk beige is not available for 2020 in the 43. would have gotten cardinal red designo but I think the brilliant blue pops better especially with saddle brown and the new tail lights. I looked briefly at the new rdx and the new qx 50 but they look cheap in comparison. I simply dont trust bmw and porsche meant no android auto and limited and expensive options. no thanks.
