Built in dashcam function on 2020 GLC?
As I have a bit of extra time on my hands these days while working from home, I started browsing through the owners manual and read if you have certain packages that contain specific cameras, you have the ability to plug in a flash drive into one of the USB-C slots in the center console and then activate that function. Has anyone used this? If you have, how well does it work?

What a bummer! With all the cameras already in place it would've been really great to have this functionality by just plugging in a USB flash drive.

I asked someone to try a workaround for me and they weren't able to get it working. From what I understand, this is ONLY available in Russia. It's all there - especially if you have the Augmented Nav - but MBUSA will not enable it.
I'd pay a reasonable amount if someone had a sw mechanism to enable it for use per the Users Manual.

Yeah, after I got mine, I asked them to activate it (via the in-vehicle telematics) and they checked with a supervisor who relayed that it's "not currently enabled". They hid behind the disclaimer that despite being in the manual, it's not available in all countries. If you look in the system set up, somewhere it's listed as DISABLED with a mid-July 2019 date (presumably the core firmware setup date for the 2020s), since my car is an October 2019 production.

Even if you get to the end of the rainbow, you may find the pot of gold isn’t there.
My Tesla has a built in dash cam that you plug in a sd card and it uses 4 cameras to record video all around the car while driving.
They even issue over the air updates to make improvements.
Sounds awesome, right?
But the reality is the cameras stink, the angles are bad, the recordings sometimes go missing, the sd gets corrupt frequently, etc.
So, many Tesla owners wire in a regular dashcam. I already wired one into our GLC, and it was easy. I posted a DIY here, and they are cheap to buy.
So while you wait for Merc to come out with the functionality, you’ll probably wish you had had a dashcam before then, and if you do get it from Merc, you’ll probably wish you had a real dashcam all along instead.

Mercedes have added new accessories for earlier GLC family- namely front and rear dash cams.
wire pack, adhesive pack and micro SD card pack. Complete system excluding install with 32Gb MB card is close to AU$1200. SD card is expensive at $101 for 32Gb card.

Thanks, yes there are cheaper units around. Normally I would install a Blackvue or a Thinkware unit, but given Mercedes have just released these new units I am keen to understand whats under the ‘hood’.
If I cannot find reasonable info I will ditch the MB cameras as inferior. Some companies refuse to disclose specs, like Bang and Olufsen in the 1970- 2000 period where they never published info and did not offer their units for comparative testing in the Audio world.
I suspect this might be the same here with the new cameras ?
I have no idea if they use battery or capacitor, UV lens, special set up to reduce dash reflection on recordings and night vision or number plate recognition - some offer enhanced software processing or IOS/Android/Windows Apps.

Correct for 2020s.
Dashcam exists, but is disabled via MB administration of software. I doubt MB ever changes this for USA.
If you have augmented reality navigation then it uses dashcam there to show route, but won’t save files.
Not sure why the good or bad of Tesla dash cams would factor into GLC execution because it’s unlikely they use the same hardware or software. That’s like saying transmission A is bad therefore all transmissions must be bad.

This seems to control most functions including downloads.
No idea if software has ability to hover over areas and magnify like Thinkware or Blackvue.

Agree with @Eaton, that's something entirely different, but it's kind of infuriating that MB would sell a separate piece of hardware yet still not allow us to enable the built-in dashcam (except in Russia from what I know). I would even pay a small fee to the dealer to enable it (though it should be part of the Aug Nav package). This makes no sense.
