2020 GLC300 M264 engine oil change - DIY getting ready

I got my 2020 GLC last year and it is about time to change the oil. I changed oil by myself for all my previous vehicles however this is my first Germany/Mercedes. Also, it is a facelift model with engine codename M264, a bit different from the previous M274 (pre-facelift engine). Since it is a pretty new engine, cannot find exact info on this site or elsewhere. So I am going to do the research and update this post for what needs to know before the job.

I would drain the oil instead of extraction. Using pair of ramps, it is pretty easy to get under the car. It may be the only way now, as this model does not have an oil level dipstick anymore.
  • Engine: M264, it should be the same as the 2019 C300 facelift model
  • Sockets and torque
    • 27mm, oil filter socket, torque 25+5 Nm (18-22 lb-ft)
    • 13mm, drain, torque 40 Nm (30 lb-ft)
    • 8mm, underbody panel, hand tight
  • Tools:
  • Engine oil:
    • Mobil 1 ESP 5W30, labeled "MB Approval" 229.51 or 229.52 (Note: it is NOT 229.5, see this thread)
    • Capacity: 6 litres; actual 5.8 litres
  • Oil filter: part number 270 180 0109 (same as pre-facelift)
  • Drain plug washer: part number 007 603 014 106(same as pre-facelift)
Fun fun!

TLDR Steps:
  1. Remove the air intake plastic to get access to the oil filter (see #5)
  2. Put front wheels on the ramps
  3. Remove the underbody panel to get access the oil drain plug (see #11)
  4. Drain the oil
  5. Replace the oil filter (see #19)
  6. Tight the drain plug with a new washer
  7. Fill in new oil. (it drains out 5.8 litre by this setup) (see #20)
  8. Reset service indicator (see #13)
Note: workshop doc see #48

Thanks for posting, please update when finished.

You use ramps to remove the underbody panels and access the drain screw, correct? Do you leave the vehicle on the stands while the oil is draining?

Yes and yes, I would remove the panel to get access to the drain plug. And I would leave the vehicle on the ramp until oil is drained and new oil is filled in.

Remove the air intake plastic to get access to oil filter:
1. Hand pull the pin/male out

2. Use nose pliers, slowly pull the female/bottom plastic. The female/bottom plastic could stay in its bay (see the picture), no need to pull it out from its bay completely.

3. Hand pull the intake opening out.

4. That is it, should have enough room to change the oil filter. No need to pull the ending of the air intake out in order to remove the whole plastic, as I figure it has two elbows and they are flexible enough to bend. The pre-facelift GLC has only one elbow and I see people pull the whole thing out.

Thanks for posting your progress, and of course wish you success

The only thing that worries me is that the filter is very long and I am not sure if there enough space there - I believe the pins on the turbo air intake were designed to disconnect it and give direct access to the filter - I don't have a shop manual, so I am just guessing. I was all set to do my oil changes with an extractor to find that this engine does not have a dipstick - on top of that I did some tests and it takes at least 5-10 min of engine on to show the oil level. I plan to under fill by about 1 mark to make sure the indicator is accurate and then add a bit - I try never to over fill the oil.

I do not know yet as I haven't done it. Also it depends on the way how you drain it, like the ramps high, how long to drain, etc.
From the manual, it says "All models 6.3 US qt (6.0 liters)", so it is about that.
As no dipstick and need to start the engine for a while until the electric indicator shows up on the dash, I am going to measure how much is drained off (using the same container, the Mobil 1, 4.73 litre). So that to know it is about right amount before start the car.

You might want to consider a MITYVAC to suck the oil out instead of going to all the trouble of ramps and panel removal, etc. This is the method used by the dealer for decades and the MB engines are designed for it. And yes, it gets as much oil out as you will get by pulling the plug. I have been DIY'ing MB oil changes since 1973 and this is the easiest way to go. I have no affiliation with the company or anybody who sells them.

This car does not have dipstick, otherwise it could be an option to suck it.

I have no problem to drain it using ramps. It seems easier than my Japanese cars that need to change filter underneath.

I will post some pictures. I did try to ramp the car up and look around for fun.

fun fun!

While the oil in the M276 engine in the W166 is, per WIS, intended be extracted through the top, my dealer drains it from the bottom. New vehicles like the inline 6 cylinder engine in the E-Class are intended, per WIS, to be drained from the bottom. It seems there is a change of heart at M-B about top vs bottom oil drain. And regardless of M-B's instruction, dealers (my dealer) seem to choose the method that works best for them.

I was able to take the oil filter out today by just removing the top snorkel as shown in the pics and using a regular 27MM deep socket on an extension. Even with the length of the arm in the filter cap, it comes out easy and goes in with just a little upward pressure on the other tube above the filter to get a little more clearance. Easy peasy.

It's about exactly 6 liters after letting it all drip out.

I didn't even have to jack the car up to change the oil. There's enough room for me to get my electric ratchet to remove all 8 of the 8mm undertray bolts, and also get the 13mm sump plug off with my drain pan.

Very easy car overall to change oil, so if you are even slightly DIY inclined, don't pay the dealer ransom.

A 1 1/16 English/American socket seems to fit onto the hex on the filter top nicely. The 1 1/16 calculates to 26.99 mm so it looks like a good fit.

are they better? or cheaper?

I would just go to the dealer to buy the original one. It is C$18-ish in Canada. Pretty cheap.

Replace the oil filter
The oil filter is a bit difficult to take out and put back as the room is pretty tight.
1. Take out the oil filter
- It is better to clean up the tubes(the one in front of, and the one above) around the oil filter first
- When taking out the oil filter, push the front soft tube to get some room. It is easy to get it out actually.

2. Replace the oil filter and rings. Make sure the filter is push down all the way to the bottom with a "click", otherwise it is hard to put the filter back in.
3. Put back the oil filter
- Similar to taking out.
- found that it is the tabs on the filter against the bottom of the round filter house metal and that is blocking the way going in. I think maybe turn the filter to the position that the bottom does not have a tab.
- The room is tight. But it is able to put back. It took me just 10mins for the 2nd year's oil change to put the filter back

Fill in new oil
It will take a long time(30 mins) to see the Engine Oil Level on the dashboard. So I would put in same amount as drained out first, or a bit less than that(like 5.7 litre), then check the level later.
  • It drained out about 5.8 litre oil with this setup(front tires on ramps)
  • It could take up to 30 min to see the Engine oil level on dashboard.
  • In order to receive a result as quickly as possible: (copied from manual)
    • warm up the engine
    • park the vehicle on a level surface
    • leave the engine running at idle speed On-board
  • From min to max, it is about 1 litre. TBD.
  • This is a picture, I found on this forum. FYI.

Note:
Bring up the "Workshop" menu and start the engine, go to "Vehicle Data", it will show something like this:
- Oil Level: 5.6 L
- Oil Temp: 20 C
- For Maximum Oil Level, Add 0.3 l Engine Oil

Not sure about 2020 MY but Mann used to be the OEM filter supplier for the GLC300. Same as Merecedes labeled filters only cheaper. I wouldn't use Wix.

2020 GLC's oil filter has same part number as previous GLC.

Yes, it says Mann on the filter, the one I bought from dealer.

Finally got to my oil change. One detail I did not see, but stumped me for a bit. The front open end of the air intake...........how does it come off the front/radiator support? Took me a while but as always, simple once you find the push pin inside the bottom of the opening. I scratched my head for a while and could see no way to get at it, then it occurred to me it had to be the little opening on the inside. Small bent scribe tool and simple to unlatch. Why wouldn't MB imprint something like PRESS HERE on the part. Oh wait, because it is Mercedes Benz and every German probably knows where to push. Comment on oil quantity. I put in six quarts and the gauge shows just a smidge below the MAX line on the bar with Oil Level OK or whatever the notation is. So it seems like 6 liters should get right in the middle of the level indicator. Now, I still got to figure out the maintenance reset. I have read 3 or 4 different descriptions but have yet to get it right. Why should an oil change be this hard?

Got an OEM filter (says Mann on it) on Amazon for like $12 from some MB dealer. I put in 6 quarts, took about 10-15 mins of driving to get the bar to register. Once stopped reads right at the MAX (just a shade below actually) so I guess 6 liters ought to get you right in the middle of the MAX-MIN range.

Followed your description. Exactly as you note. If you could easily get off the turbo tube would be simple but I am not sure how to do that and if its worth the trouble .
