2020 GLC 300 rattling noise cold start.

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to MB world and was wondering if anyone could try to tell me the source of this sound. I drive a 2020 glc300 with 14,000 miles.

Basically, everytime I start my car on a cold start and put it into drive, I hear a metalic rattling noise from the dashboard. You can only hear it when driving 5-6 miles per hour and then disappears unitl I stop and re-accelarate. The sound disappears one the engine warms up but will be back the next day I start my car. I've seen multiple threads about this, but wasn't able to find anyone with same rattling noise.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Does that happen since the last service?
Could it be something came loose during the servicing.
When cold and low speed, engine rattles more.

Hello,

I just bought the car and they said they did a service B. It’s weird that that it only does it during a cold start and goes away one the engine warms up. I just can’t figure out where because I can’t hear it when the car is idle. Only when I accelerate at idler.

Same!

I have the same exact rattle in my 2021 GLC. It is actually more noticeable for me when the car is warmed up and the outside temperature is warmer. I mostly notice it when I am stopped on an incline and taking back off. I took it in for service and they test drove it and went through it looking for anything loose, but could not find any issues or replicate the rattle (of course). When I have time I am gong to stop back in and have the service manager take a ride so that I can replicate it. Please post an update if you get to the bottom of this. It’s definitely not a normal glc noise as I previously had a 2018 and never experienced this rattle.

The attached file is only 4-second long and is hard to hear the rattling noise clearly. Can you upload a longer one?

Rattling noise

That’s as the longest I’ve able to record. I think it got compressed when attaching to this post. It sounds like 2 pieces of metals hitting each other from the dashboard/ instrument cluster.

I used to have similar problem with my previous GL320CDI
Removing the front panel was easy.
Not sure the cause but I did put in plastic foam and "moved" the wires a bit.
After that, no more rattling.

Thought I should provide an update since I finally had time to take my GLC in so that they could investigate the rattle. Eventually they found that the vacuum line going through the bulkhead from the vacuum to the brake booster was out of the grommet and not secured. After securing the line the rattle is gone.

I just made an appointment with MB. Will leave the car there over night so they can test it in the morning. Hopefully will still be cold enough.
