Squeaking/Creaking From Rear of Vehicle

On our 2021 GLC300, every time I back up on to our driveway at an angle, there is a noticeable squeaking/creaking noise. This happens when the drivers side wheel is already up on the driveway as the passenger side wheel hits the bump. I can replicate this noise on a speed bump using the same angle. The car has spent nearly a month at the dealer swapping out almost every suspension component on the rear passenger side to no avail. I had a loaner 2022 GLC that actually had the same issue and drove another 2022 GLC that also had the same noise so it seems like a common issue.

Ive attempted to diagnose this myself. I’ve removed the factory spare tire, the cargo floor board, folded down the rear seats, etc… and the noise is still there. The drivers side does not do this. I’ve even tried to back up with the rear hatch opened to eliminate the door seals on that as a source.

Anyone else have a similar issue?

I have a 2021 GLC as well and it had been back to two different dealers due to rattle inside the car. The advisor at the first dealer drove the car and said he was 100% sure where the rattling was coming from. To make this short, problem was not resolved.

At the second dealer, the advisor even suggested not doing anything at all because opening up the roof underlining might make the problem worse This from Mercedes Benz?

Next thing I did was to let my son drive the car while I sat at the back seat and listened to the source of the rattling and determined the exact spot where it’s coming from. Then I went to another dealer and explained the whole situation. When I picked up my car later in the afternoon, rattling problem was resolved. Btw, the 2022 GLC loaner from the dealer had the same rattle at the same location as my car. This points to a QC issue at the factory.

Hopefully if you do what I did, your issue may also be resolved to your satisfaction.

Since you can replicate this squeaking noise at will, it should not be too difficult to find the source. Once the source is found, it is easy to fix.

2 questions:-
1. have you tried having someone standing outside and observe the bottom rear of the car to see if some part of the undercarriage hits/scratches the kerb of your driveway or a speed bump?
2. when this squeaking noise happens, does it matter if you back up really really slow? Does the noise get a little louder if you back up a little faster?

Thanks for the replies!

There’s nothing scraping as the driveway bump is just a few inches. Nothing seems apparent from the outside in terms of noise. If I go over the bump really
slow, then I can kind of avoid hearing it. Faster speeds make it more apparent.

At this point I’m not sure if it’s the suspension even since so many parts have been replaced. It could be something inside. I had thought it could be the sunroof seals but the loaner I had that made the same noise didn’t have a sunroof at all so that theory is out.

What did the repair order state the issue was and how was it resolved?

You didn't mention if the squeaking/creaking noise was something like metal to metal. Even if the loaner you got didn't have a sunroof, it doesn't eliminate the rattling between roof underlining (frame perhaps) and the roof itself. Just a thought since I've experienced it twice, on my 2021 and the 2022 loaner.

Hope you find that pesky irritant.

The noise is more like a rubber bushing or gasket. Metal on metal would sound more like a grinding noise. Sometimes it’s a very quiet squeak and other times it’s louder.

Advisor said more padding was added above the roof liner. Rattle disappeared for about a week but is back again. Have a service A appointment tomorrow, will ask advisor to add more padding covering a wider area than the first try. At least the advisor knows where the problem is and what exactly needs to be done.

How about trying with all doors open?

Worth trying, the chime that tells you vehicle isn't in park might be annoying but might not be an issue. Give it a shot. Safety first though.
