Removing some oil from the oil pan, can it be sucked out?

The dash keeps telling me that the oil level is too high occasionally - just once in a while. Has anybody ever tried to vacuum any oil out through the oil filter opening once you take the oil filter out? I hate the jack it up and go through all that work just to take a couple ounces out of them engine. I have gone online to look for the volume of oil when I change the oil and I put in what I found on line. Maybe I put in an ounce or two too much. In the future, I'll put in less and then check the gauge and add some if I need some.

That's the way they do it at the dealership. And you'll get more out if you do a full.change thay way. I wouldn't worry to much about if its only occassional. You can buy oil extractors like mityvac online and then do all your own oil changes.

I have a vacuum device. On my older Mercedes i went down through the dipstick tube. But now there is no dipstick. I'm pretty sure at the dealer. They have to take the drain plug out of the oil pan. I was wondering if anybody ever was able to get a tube down where the oil filter is. It is not hard to take the oil filter out. So either way I'm gonna give it a try. It is still under warranty, so I want to fix that before I take it in for a few minor repairs that needs to be done before the warranty runs out.

No dipstick tube means an oil extractor (like mityvac) won't work. I use to love oil changes without going under and taking all of the cladding off to drain the pan. Now, I've installed a Fumoto valve on the oil pan. A quarter turn and the oil is running out. Can be used to let a little out too. I connect a short hose straight into my recycling jug. No mess. No crush washer.

Now, if it was a an ounce or two excess, I would change the oil filter. Sacrifice it. A Mann oil filter is $12 of Amazon. It's must hold some oil. There's a hidden menu where you can read the level. Tells you how much over. Search the forum. I'll look in my notes.

I use to put 5000g of oil in. Yes, I weighed it. Never hit the excess limit. Now I just put 6 liters in. I switched to Liqui Moly and use a 5 liter jug and a 1 liter jug. No measuring.

Good luck.

If your oil filter is inverted on the engine bottom, and if your filter cover has a drain plug, this is an easy way to get less than a liter removed. The oil drain plug also works, but getting it back in against a surging stream of oil can be difficult.

The oil filter is too mounted.

GET TO THE VEHICLE INFO SCREEN
There are videos on how to get to the service menu. Car door shut, hit start 1 time, set display to show odometer, on the left side of steering wheel, hold home button for 1.5 seconds then press select button (black middle square next to home button), select vehicle info, scroll down to oil info. It should tell you how many liters till full or how many to remove. Do this after you've warmed up the engine otherwise it won't read.

Advance Auto has Fram filters on sale. Four dollars each. I'll buy two of them and put them in and get them wet. Then I'll put my good Mann filter back in. That should drain a few ounces out. I will try shoving my tube down in and see if I can get down into the oil pan. I'm guessing you can't. But I'll try just to see.

I've never heard of anyone using an oil extractor on engines without a dipsrick. The way i use to evacuate was to use the tubing of my evacuator to form a seal with the dipstick tube thereby using the diostick tube as part of the suction assembly. There's no reason why the oil filter return needs to run to the bottom of the sump. Clearly in this case you don't either, you just want to extract some. I like you're making use of my sacrificial oil filter idea.

Here's my finding on how much oil Mahle oil filter hold. First of all, I drove the car until everything reach operating conditions. I let it sit for 45 minutes. Pulled and weighed the oil filter cartridge. Pull a new one out of stock for reference weight. Using a Mahle oil filter, it retained approximately 48 grams plus 10g or so was lost thru drippage. Let's call it 60g of oil lost if just changing oil filter. There's roughly 5100g in 6 liters. That's 850g/l so 60g is about 0.07 l. If you changed the filter twice, you'd lose 0.14 liters/0.15 qt/4.75 Oz. Check how much excess you are thru the vehicle info menu and see if changing the oil filter gets you into the good because at some point, it cost less to drain and put back the right amount. Because the system doesn't provide a reading until oil is at temp, this becomes very annoying to try to sneak up to it perfectly.

So maybe just putting in a Fram filter and taking it out might be sufficient. I haven't taken the time to play with us but I will soon. Thanks for providing that information. I'll do it once and drive it for a while and check it and see what it says. If need be, I'll do it a second time.

I did stop and buy two cheapy Fram oil filters. Advance Auto. $8.00 for both with tax. They are trying to sell them out because they don't wanna stock them anymore. So they're on super sale. I put them both in, one at a time and then took them out after running it for a minute. Then I put my original Mann filter back in cause it only had like 500 miles on it. I tried to get my tube down in to suck some oil out, but I could not. But I had to try. I just did this last night. So I'll see you in the days to come if the dash tells me I still have too much oil in it. Hopefully not.

We are moving to Denver this summer. We bought a house there. It has a 10 car garage. One part of it is for RVs. So I will have a four post lift in that bay. I'll be able to raise up a vehicle and walk underneath it without crouching. I can't wait. Harbor freight has a roll around oil change unit. Has the long tube that rises up. All my life I changed my own oil. I just can't trust anybody else.

How many tenths of a liter did the warning tell you to remove before you tried replacing the oil filter multiple times?
