2020 63 shuts off w/ECO start-stop

So I've had the 63 for about two weeks now and just over 2k miles. This has probably happened 3 times, but when I'm sitting in traffic or at a stop light with ECO start/stop on as soon as I step on the gas the vehicle immediately shuts off (not completely, but like I had just pressed the Start button). So I get stuck like an asshat until I start the vehicle back up and back in drive. Anyone else experience this or could I be doing something wrong? Again this is completely random and I haven't associated it to doing anything specifically.

My car engine shuts off when the ECO start/stop is on when I'm stoped.
When I take the foot off the brake the engine starts right away ready to go when I push the gas pedal.

If I remember correctly, somebody posted with a similar issue in the C63 forum. It's some kind of a malfunction, but dealer was unable to diagnose because it happens only randomly. It should most certainly not shut off the engine if you step on the throttle. You can control the start/stop with the brake pedal. If you keep light pressure then it doesn't turn off, but if you apply more pressure to come to a complete stop then it turns off. It should immediately turn back on once you take the foot of the brake and stay on. I haven't had any issue with ECO start/stop in my '19 C63S, but I turn it off immediately after starting the car and only occasionally turn it on if I know I'll be stopped for a while. Otherwise it's just a complete nuisance and often turns off the engine just to turn it back on a second later when traffic moves. I just don't believe this is very good for the engine in the long run. It's a stupid feature to be frank and should be turned off by default. All it does is allowing manufacturers to claim higher mpg numbers if they turn it on by default.

Thank you John Madden....when I push the gas pedal, the car stutters slightly and the car turns off (like if you push the Start/Stop button).

Cool, first luxury vehicle and spend this type of money for this to happen...it’s an slightly higher annoyance. Dealership told me to bring it in, but I’m sure they won’t find it either.

Unfortunately, there seem to be a few bad engines in circulation that have these kinds of issues. From random misfires under load to random stalling issues. Seems like dealers are unable to find the root cause and fix it, eventually leading to a lemon law case and buyback by MB. There's one guy over in the C63 forum whose car has spent 2+ months at the dealership unable to get his misfires fixed. He's barely been able to drive the car after taking delivery before the issues started and he is working with his lawyer to get it declared a lemon and have MB buy it back. It's a long and frustrating process if it happens to you.

My previous 2016 E63S wagon had a very similar problem - the engine shut down when I came to a stop (as expected with eco start/stop on) but when I released the brake the engine did no re-start. The only solution was to shut the engine off and restart it. Not what you want to happen in traffic. My dealer had the car for approximately 3 weeks and finally was told by AMG to replace the starter relay and the transmission aux pump. After that, it worked as expected. This all happened after around 2 years of ownership.

It should not damage the engine if the engine is not very cold. Idling is not good for engine, it will cost lots of build up inside the engine.

That's not necessarily true. Yes, idling a cold engine is not good, but idling a warm engine, especially a hot engine after some spirited driving is advisable to keep those fluids circulating. The longer the engine is off, the more time the oil has to drain back into the oil pan and then when the engine cranks back over there is less lubrication. While the engineers do design the starters etc. with auto start/stop in mind, I'm finding that more often then not I come to a stop, engine shuts off, but traffic moves quickly again so it restarts within a second. That just doesn't feel right to turn it on/off that frequently. Jason from EE did a good video on this subject and generally you only safe fuel by shutting off the engine if the car would idle 7 seconds or more. If you live in a place with very long red phases then start/stop might work out for you and might actually be beneficial aside from the oil draining back down, so it still warrants some thought. At the end of the day this is a performance car and I drive it spirited most of the time. I do use start/stop if I find myself in really bad traffic and I know I'm stopped for a while, but I don't drive much in city traffic where it could be beneficial.

Well she’s at the dealership, so I’m waiting to hear back tomorrow on the details. I’ll post updates as I find out. I miss her and the base C300 just ain’t itching that scratch like she does. 😭

FWIW, my local dealership's head of service said the first thing you should do when you get in the car is turn the Auto/Start stop off. He said it was a $2-3k part to replace and asks his customers if the juice is worth the squeeze in fuel savings vs wear and tear. Just what he told me. I dislike it as a general principal, so I've never used it and always turn it off on all my cars.

So this isn't something that would be covered under warranty???? I could care less about saving ounces of fuel, but if I paid this much money i want everything working as designed....

If you daily drive it, it will save about 10%gas
and I used it for 3 years over 66000km no problem.

That's unrealistic over the lifetime of the car. Actual fuel savings depend very much on where you drive. Real world studies have shown that fuel savings in city driving is between 4% and about 8% depending on traffic. You get no fuel saving on highway driving. So let's say you drive 80% highway and 20% city, so you are saving 4% to about 8% of fuel for those 20% of your driving, so we are effectively talking about 1-2% overall fuel savings. If you drive only 10% of the time in the city, then it's even less. This is just some rough math, because the mpg is the lowest in city driving, but the point is you will never see 10% saving or even close unless you drive a 100% in the city.

Well I AVG 15 L/ 100km with keep it on. P
And 17 without it... So it's very nice in city driving.
and I drive 40km daily for work.

Perhaps with a GLC the savings are higher given the poor aerodynamics and additional weight. The interesting figure though is overall lifetime mpg, but to really compare that you would need two cars one driving with it ON and one with OFF over a significant number of miles. Just for comparison, my lifetime avg fuel economy is about 13.8 l/100km in my C63S over the last 10,000 miles with it OFF 99.9% of the time. That includes about 6500 miles in Europe with lots of high speed driving on the German Autobahn and weekend canyon carving here in the USA. If a couple of liters makes a difference to you, you shouldn't be driving a heavy box on wheels, just saying. The feature is silly.

Same has happened to me twice. Last was a dangerous situation on busy highway. Needless to say that all the honking and fist-waving from other drivers was embarrassing. Car is at dealer now. Battery was fine and the computer checked out with no faults. They are checking for loose ground wires today...not very hopeful there is a local solution. Mercedes should fix this ASAP.

Seriously this is a major major issue. If its happening to more than one especially since everyone doesn't post on forums there is most likely more. Talking massive law suite if there isnt' a recall. Sucks to hear this. Those things are just stupid anyway damn epa pollution bs.

I thought I posted the update, but apparently not. So they diagnosed it as three of the cylinders were misfiring. They fixed it by replacing the fuel injectors for those cylinders and after about 3 weeks in the shop, it was good to go. Haven’t had an issue since. Hopefully you get it taken care of.

I started to experience the same issue. Car has around 900 miles now and everything was fine until a couple of days ago when I stopped at a light with eco start on, the engine shuts off but upon releasing the brake instead of engine starting, the engine remains off and this information message comes up:
"Active Brake Assist
Functions Limited
See Operator's Manual"

Were you getting this message when this would occur to you?

I have just noticed when preparing the picture to upload, that when this happens the gear changes to neutral (N) and few lights come on in the dashboard. This is very annoying because when it happens it is usually in traffic and drivers behind start honking and probably calling me nasty names.

If I turn off eco start this issue does not happen but I still want this resolved.

I've had the same issue with my C63...It stalls at lights, it hesitates leaving from a light, almost causing a whiplash effect. Mercedes dealer can't replicate, but hasn't tried either. It's so frustrating to spend that kind of money on a car that has issues.

From another thread....this part has been found to be faulty on various models....something to look into...could be everyone's issue with the auto/eco start/stop. Had my 2018 GLC die out at a light and not knowing what happened. Restarted the car and problem solved for the time being. I have found if turning off the auto start/stop control or someone could even use the ODB2 module to turn it off permanently. Might solve the issue. This part is on the passenger side footwell. Will update with thread once I can refind it. Good luck!!
