Hello,
New owner here. Would like to get a set of winter wheel and tires and wonder what people are using. Or are folks wrapping their OEM rims with something like Continental DWS Extreme Contact?
Also, I never had a vehicle without some kind of spare, and I would like to get one that fits in the rear lower trunk compartment. Anyone carrying a spare? Suggestions besides AAA?
Thanks in advance and I'm really enjoying the AMG experience so far.
Im also looking at winter wheels and have been comparing specs of wheels and tires for the last month.
tire rack doesn’t offer any wheel options for our vehicle, but if you use the glc43
you can see what the options look like and find what fits your budget and style.
also the x3m and sq5 both share the same wheel bolt patter and hub bore
so most 5x112 and 66mm hub bore would work with the correct offset.
(Use this info at your own risk)
i’ve put all kinds of wheels on most of my cars, but not everyone is comfortable using diff wheels and specs.
also check for a gls spare tire
its 19x 4 and clears the front brembo
but you will need a 10 mill spacer to use the oem lug nuts, it didn’t fit under the trunk liner for me. But others have made it work
No spare here, the reality of driving on anything that is space saving with wheels that big and everything else involved just makes me want to tow the car instead. Lugging a spare around, unless on a purposeful long trip, would just take up space in the back.
Re: Winter wheels, I just ended up using my OEM (RWL) wheels for my winter set and bought a set of OEM RWE wheels that you can only get on the "S" model we can't get in the SUV. Found a decent set of edition 1's with the yellow stripe for half of what they cost with tires on EBAY.
Re: Winter Tires, i am running a set of 21" Pirelli Winter Scorpions and have been very satisfied. They work great in the snow/cold, which we get here alot in Michigan. The Conti DWS is more of an All Season tire that works ok in the rain/snow, but I've heard that if you get any consistent snow, they aren't that great.
Keep in mind that the tolerance on these cars is less than an inch in overall diameter before the ABS and traction control starts acting funny.

Curious, thanks for the tip inputting the GLC43. Noticing though the only size they are rating is 255/45R20. Did you just find the tire size based on the new rims purchased? Or did you just go with the suggested sizes for the GLC43?
Thanks again.
This may not be for everyone, but I'll throw it out there...
I went with Nokian Hakkapeliitta snows in stock size (F: 265-40/21, R: 295-35/21) on Vorsteiner V-FF 103 wheels (F: 21x9, ET21 R: 21x10.5, ET15)
It took a while to find something I liked, AND something I could justify/afford for Winter, but it all came together with help from Mops at Nemesis who was always fantastic on my Audi stuff.
The Nokians are simply top notch. I'd had Blizzaks , Dunlops, Pirellis... on other cars, but I have to rate the Nokians at the top of the list so far (1 Winter). But, so is the price. Nobody deals on Nokians is what I found
The wheels look great IMO, but I ended up adding 10mm spacers up front when all was said and done. I knew it was a possibility, but getting off-the-shelf wheels in 21" with similar to stock widths was a chore at the correct offsets. There's not a lot if you're at all bothered by not being "flush"
A lot of guys will recommend 20" wheels for better availability, snow-worthiness, and price. I have to agree, but despite all logic, I knew I'd be bothered by the look of the 20s in Winter.
Thanks for the info. Nice rims and they must look good! I am running the 20" options now as I am in the NYC tri state area and the DPW should be up on charges considering how terrible our roads are kept. I know the 21"s look great but I am going to stick with 20" at least until I move to Germany ;-) Probably going to try and find a set of OZ Racing for winters that are same OEM sizing as what I have now. It is doo that TireRack and Discount Tire has nothing that really fits the GLC63.
I've been using Pirelli Scorpion Winter on stock 21" sizes (265/40R21 and 295/35R21) for the past 3 years and they have been pretty good. Also located in NY/NJ area.
