New 63, engine light on

Got a new car last week, still on first tank of fuel. About 250 miles on it. Wife's car. She gets home and says the engine light is on, sure enough. Is there any way to see what the issue is? Code, anything?

Gas cap is tight, oil level is full, what else can I check?

Other then the engine light, wife likes the car!!

Thx!

Have it scanned by the dealer, an indy or the local car parts store. If you DIY, the iCarsoft MB II is used by many members of this site.

Early model M17x engines had difficult to diagnose misfires resulting in CEL, mainly in W213 E63.

Yes, she understands how to drive, and not drive, a new car.

What information do you have on how the car is driven that would turn on an engine light? I'm curious.

Welcome to the forums!
Lets hope it's just an O2 sensor or something simple. Kind of disheartening on a car right out of the box! GL to ya!

Mine (a 2020 GLC63 SUV) just came on at 20K miles, took it to the dealer, they scanned it in 30 minutes or less and something to do with an emissions sensor/module. Car drives fine in all modes, dealer said no worries about driving it normally (or abnormally!). Part is on order.

Does the car drive normally, not stutter, etc? Is the light solid on or flashing or have other indicators? Its probably just emissions. I'm not sure the MBs do this, but other cars will have a solid CEL for minor issues and a flashing/red CEL for critical items.

Re: breaking it in, the internets is full of debates on this, but I am firmly in the camp of as long as you are not pegging the redline ALL the time, spirited driving is not bad for it.

Light is on solid, no flashing. Orange engine symbol.
Drives normal, no other lights/indicators.

I've owned many new cars and understand how to properly break a car in. I'm still curious what driving techniques turn on an engine light due to improper break in procedure.

Thx all,

Probably just a sensor.

I don't think it was due to improper break-in. I tend to think the break in recommendations are more CYA for the manufacturers than real. I've always broken in cars similar to how I am going to drive them every day.

Check the small coolant reservoir in the front center. I've had the CEL come on a few times and it's always been low coolant in that reservoir in my case.

Myself I never go over the RPM indicated by the BIP, yet I always break in new and or rebuilt engines by high load low RPM by driving up a steep hill/ mountain in a higher gear yet low RPM. With the exception of pro-build high performance engines such that I’ve had in my previous Porsche 928. I’m sure there are other exceptions of course but for normal road cars that’s what I tend to do.

Called the dealer, they said it's ok to drive.

Lol, the wife went to work today and said the engine light turned off. who knows.

I'll schedule an appointment with the dealer to confirm everything is ok.

Thanks for the feedback.

It could have been the blinker fluid too, maybe due to temps getting cooler??

2021 GLC 43
I am a tad late to this discussion but I just bought my 2021 GLC 43 and followed proper break in yet the light came on around 1450 miles. I took it into the dealer right away and after they ran a check I felt like a complete idiot...the sensor error that went off was the fuel pressure. I had refilled my car and was in a hurry (and it was cold as **** outside) and I guess I didnt make sure it was fully screwed on "the click". Since I live in the mountains, on my way back up from the city (that is lower elevation) my light came on because of the fuel pressure dropping. It seems so simple yet with AMG's the sensors are very sensitive. Hopefully, your light is as simple as making sure that the gas cap is fully screwed on correctly. Wish you all the best.
