Dash Cam

Hi guys,

I bought a USB to try out the integrated dash came on my GLC63. Does it start automatically? Currently, every time I start my car, I go to the APPS options and turn on the Dashcam.

what is your guy's experience with this feature?

Thanks,

Might be something along the lines of loop recording.

Just keep in mind you do need a good sd card/storage device like samsung endurance sd cards that are specifically designed for constant rear and write/overwrite like for dashcam. I also remembered from other threads that you need to have a specific file format and was it that the storage capacity matters as well?

Yea I got it for $50 during black friday, had it lying around. Plugged it in no formatting or anything required, and no errors so far.

The benefit of higher storage say for example your 500GB vs 64GB is that it doesn't have to overwrite the cells as many times as it never gets the chance to be filled in full once (especially depending on how much you drive). Which means it will last longer even if it isn't dashcam rated.

Too bad there is no parking mode? I don't think? Which traditional dashcam has but then you need to hardwire those to have parking mode anways, the OEM setup is a good compromise although you don't have sound?

That got me curious, in the previous gen Mercedes, there is a built-in hard drive that allows you to store media, say from a cd. Good days I guess. Don't new MBs still have a hard drive to store something, why does MB force you to buy your own storage media to store dashcam files? Or maybe I am answering my own question, the storage capacity built-in is tiny?

Thanks for the replies guys.

I have a 2021 GLC63, so not sure if this year turns on the dash automatically? I bought a SANDISK 512GB ULTRA DUAL DRIVE Mini-C USB form BestBuy at a cost of $56. I plug it in the center console then moved it to the front charger to see if that started it automatically. When I start it manually I see a red dot on the MBUX screen however if I don't the red dot is not on. I'll play more with the settings later in the afternoon.

Here are some pictures for those who asked.

I bit the bullet, and paid the $200.00 to have the dash cam feature activated. I bought 2 thumb drives and a connector wire to reduce the chance of damaging the USB port. One of the flash drives has a lightning connector, so I can download footage to my elderly iPhone.
I formatted the drives before plugging them in.
I am not fully satisfied with the MB dash am feature. I assumed(bad move) that since there were so many sensors and cameras on the car, it would be like the Tesla, and allow recorded footage to be viewed from all of them.
But unless there is some setting that I am missing, I can only access the video from the front camera.
I am considering adding an off the shelf dash cam to record side and rear views.

Sadly it uses the AR camera only, the other cameras, only available in the Guard 360 feature but it only records if there is a damage detected and you have to manually enable that feature.

Are you using the MB Dash Cam, that is installed on newer MB's? I know you have to pay the one-time $200.00 and My Mercedes will operate the camera, as I understand.
What storage device are you using? SD Card or USB drive? Are they available from local MB Parts Dept or suggestions? Also, any other advice or tips? How are the USB, into the USB Port for Android Auto, or? The SD Card??

Thanking you in advance,
Bruce

Updated: I went back to the dashcam app and went deeper into the setting, it now starts at startup VERY simple.

Thanks for the input guys!!

I was going to ask about the other cameras being used at the same time as the dashcam but MB2timer and W205C43PFL already answered that question. I did notice that when a car got near me the rear camera was activated, do these events get recorded?

nope, only if there was a collision but you need to manually enable it, it is called Guard 360.

FYI
In my 2023 GLC300 SUV the dashcam is keyed to the profile. Daughter in a slight fender bender and when I went to see the video it didn’t exist because it wasn’t turn on in her profile. I have it on in my profile but always thought once it was on it was on across the board. Not so, I turned it on in the guest too. So if you have more than one profile suggest you check all profiles.
