Questions on 19" and 20" Wheels

The roads here have tons of potholes so we want the tires/wheels to be somewhat resistant to these potholes.

From MB website, I see that GLE450 standard tires are 255/50R19, optional AMG tires are 275/50R20. So the 20" tires are actually higher profile (1 cm thicker). My question is ---- Is the 20" worse than 19" for potholes even when the 20" tires are higher profile ?

thanks !

You are correct that because the sidewall height is a ratio of the width, and the 255s and 275s are both 50-series, the 20s will have more sidewall height (or cushion if you will). While the width may have some impact on ride, I believe that sidewall height is the main factor. I would definitely go with one of the 20" options: 50R or RZV/RZW. Your choice will be determined by whether you opt for the AMG Line Exterior package; that comes with bigger front brakes that will not work with the 19s. Aside from ride, the 19s look really puny on this vehicle, IMO.

Don't take it personally! Just my (and several others) opinion that they are a little small for the car visually. When you get new tires I would suggest going to 265/50-19.

They are small! I stayed with the 19" as I was thinking my 2016 Blizzak's on rims would work for winter. Following your rim conversion project closely!

I will post a complete write up on that as I get everything checked out. I'm hoping before Fall the aftermarket catches up with extended lugs and spacers.

Well, ideally you have two sets of wheels so aren't dismounting and mounting twice a year. That's what I've always done. You might find some 20" takeoffs down the line as more of these get in the market.

Yes, always have used two set of rims and fortunately we have a tire shop that stores them for next to nothing in cost.
