high-pitched whistling sound
#101
I purchased a 2020 GLE350 a few months ago. Has anyone else noticed a whistling sound outside the drivers window when driving above 70mph? I don't hear it at lower speeds but once I get on the highway, I can certainly hear it. It's not overwhelming but certainly noticeable and annoying. I had a 2017 GLE and this was not an issue. I didn't order the acoustic comfort package but I didn't think I would hear so much noise outside the window on a $70,000+ car.

We just leased 2020 GLE 450 on last Friday. I drove 5 hours to pick up the car since we couldnt find the one we want around here. After driving another 5 hours on the freeway around 80mph, i exactly hear the same noise as you. It is totally annoying for me since the cars msrp is $80k. Did you figure it out the problem? I am planning to take it back to the dealer.(not the same, i wont drive another 5 hours ) I totally don't accept it like this. Please let me if there is any news.

Has anyone had any success in MB USA addressing this issue? I have opened cases with their "executive" team and all they can say is that it is "normal" operation. They stand by their decision and say they "agree to disagree" with just about anything wrong with the vehicle. My GLE has been in the shop for weeks at a time for many different concerns. Most concerns are not reproducible so MB USA is washing their hands of it.
Just today I asked to speak to a supervisor at MBUSA and was denied my request, basically saying that there is no supervisor above them.
Total BS, guaranteed to by the first and last Mercedes I purchase.

I talked to the dealer that i leased the car, they say take it to your local dealer and as of today, there is no recall about this issue. I just scheduled service for today at Fletcher Jones Newport beach in Orange County. Since they are the biggest Mercedes dealer in the USA, lets see what they will say. I will keep posted.

Heads up, guys. I just left the car to the dealer. We did a test drive with a technician. He heard the noise right away and without me saying anything he said it is most likely coming from the side mirror seals. He said he had the same issue several times on different models and there is nothing to worry about it. They said it will most likely be ready tomorrow. I hope they will be able to fix it. I will share how is the car after i pick it up.

Sure not a problem. His name is Ray, but the technician is someone else and i don't know his name. He is the one who recognized the problem right away. Let me pick up the car first if the problem really solves i will ask his name to give it to you. No problem!

Same Problem Driver’s Side Whistle
At dealership in Virginia. 2020 GLE 350 has the same whistle others noticed. Service tech said MB USA has documentation on 20 cases of this problem. No info on a fix. Very frustrating. 2400 miles on the suv we built and picked up in March. To add insult to injury, I paid for the acoustic package to have a quieter cabin!

Wind whistle
I find it very odd that some vehicles have this, and many, including mine, do not. The potential culprit parts (mirrors, door seals) should be the same on all. Very strange. It seems, as one mentioned, folding the mirrors while this is occurring would help with diagnosis. If it goes away, it's not the door seals. I look forward to when this mystery is finally figured out.

UPDATE!
I just got a call from the service, they said they determined the problem is actually not the mirror, the noise is coming from the mirror cap. He said they will order it to replace. It will take a couple of days to receive it. I will keep posted once they actually change and i pick up the car.

Well, we'll see. At least we got one step further now and they dont say there is nothing wrong. I hope it is just a defective mirror cap.

My whistling sound comes and goes and I somewhat got used to it but looking forward to seeing if they can fix your problem. Thanks for your posts.

Hey Guys,
Very good news. First of all, let me tell you guys that the problem has been solved! They replace the driver's side mirror cap. See the attached screenshot of the detailed explanation from the dealer. I drove the car very on a windy day, I was lucky that the day was windy No noise at all. What i also realized that between the mirror cap and the black frame, there was a larger gap before they replace it, and now the gap is much smaller. Probably that was the problem. If your dealer cant solve it let them call Fletcher Jones Newport Beach. My service advisor was Ray. Let me know if you have guys have any questions.

On a brand new car, with only a couple of hundred miles on it, i wouldn't do it myself. It is just fundamentally wrong to me. Brand new Mercedes, and it has been a year since they introduce it, a lot of people having the same problem, but no recall on a very simple fix. Let them do the job. Get your loaner car for free, have some coffee. They gotta fix it.

I took the car to first scheduled maintenance. Service mentioned that there are twelve bulletins out there for whistling sound. They said they submitted a case to Mercedes for guidance. I will keep you posted if they will be able to fix this.

I eliminated the whistling noise from the mirror by placing .139” (1/8 inch nominal) BUNA-N O-Ring Cord Stock Durometer 70A in the groove on the top half of the mirror housing cover. This fix worked and looks great. Unless you look at the housing very closely and compare it to another mirror you would never notice it. Looks factory original. That being said the MB engineers should be embarrassed about this design failure. How did they not hear this noise during test drives and wind tunnel testing?

Thanks. I'm a civil engineer but I remembered this flow theory from my physics and fluids classes. I've designed a lot of pressure vessels that utilized buna o-ring seals so I was aware of their capabilities.
