Might add the GLE 63 S & GLE 580 that share the same battery. As I recall my GLE 450 had a .9 kWh Lithium vs the slightly larger 1 kWh on the AMG’s. I don’t recall anyone with a V8 failing but they share the same EQ power train so should have the same risk?

I just got a text from my SA and he said the battery came in this morning and that they have begun work and he will keep me posted. I started receiving messages from the MB Connect app saying the vehicle was left unlocked, low starter battery and even that a new software update is available. It's a start!

Also, I found someone has filed a class action lawsuit in NJ with a complaint that sounds like this issue.
Newer version of the bulletin is available and attached.

Includes all model series CLS 257, E class 213 and 238, GLE and GLS 167, with code B01 - also listed series 290 which I am unfamiliar with.

Thanks for posting. Not a mechanical guy, but this seems to me to be very complex and more than one point of failure in a very sophisticated system. It would appear that the software issues which some on this forum have mentioned are easily corrected but that leaves lots of other mechanical issues and art failure to be dealt with. Does anyone think that this is "fixable" issue permanently or will this require a full revision of the 48V system?

I decided to file my battery failure as a safety issue with the NHTSA. It’s a little bit of a pain since my VIN didn’t work, so I had to call them. It might help get faster resolution if the safety factor is reported by those of us with a failure. If the battery failed in busy Freeway traffic or in Winter in a remote location it will be more than an inconvenience. I also reported the Stop Sign issue with misreads creating unexpected braking in Distronic.
If anyone else wants to pile on…..

I just got another text from my SA. He said my vehicle will be ready in 2 hours. I'll update everyone on what they did/replaced once I have confirmation.

I have my fingers crossed for you and hope you never see the inside of the shop again other than for elective work.

V8s also have been reported to have the issue. There are a lot less V8 so not as common.

I'm back up and running. I just hope it doesn't happen again. The service advisor had another car towed in today for the same problem. I asked again and confirmed that he has seen many of them, but he claims none have come back a second time after the "fix".

If you have a 48V failure, doe the vehicle just shut off and stop if running? Or, does the vehicle not start once turned off?

For me it was running great the day before (I drove it 200 miles on Saturday) and then on Sunday I hopped in to go wash it and it wouldn’t start.

Reportedly, at least in most cases, the 48 volt failure doesn’t shut off the engine if it happens while driving. The car goes into limp mode almost-as bad though. You might have time to get to the side of the road or drive a short distance. But since the Coolant pump is 48 volt driven it will stop cooling so you aren’t going very far…at best! Only Mercedes knows if there is one cause and how that factors into drive ability. When they die while parked they seem totally dead…no jump start-locked in park.

Took Management’s car in today for a couple of warranty items. (E350). Spent a little time talking to my SA, SA Mgr and shop foreman, all separately and in different parts of the facility . Discussed 48v battery issue. They all claimed the issue was a bad batch of batteries primarily affecting 2020s which didn’t compute for me. They had one day in Jan or February where they took in 4 in one day. They also had an issue with a GLS. They claim to have no issues in months and of the batteries replaced (no work arounds, only total replacement), not one has come back. They also have the parts for the wind noise issue and claim all new builds have corrected mirror. Just reporting what they told me. I am not in a position to judge the accuracy of their comments. At this point, I’ll wait for my delivery unless they delete more options. I was told by Sales Mgr that AR is not going to be an option on 22s which sounds odd to me.

AR takes the Camera so also computer chip that’s in short supply. Augmented Reality was removed from the NetStar System at least 60 days ago for the GLE 63 S that I had ordered. That also means no Dash Cam option. No Distronic either…too much Tech NA for me.

Anyone know the retail price of the 48v battery......maybe something to consider if thinking of owning outside of warranty.

In both of my cases, the car was running fine just before the malfunction. It just wouldn't turn on the next time.

Distronic is part of Driver Assistance package? They never said a thing about losing that option. Only dash cam and AR. I thought distronic was used for cruise control and used radar in grill, not camera.

I couldn’t order the Driver Assistance Package & then they took Augmented away but still left the Dash Cam. Without a Camera I’m not sure how the Dash Cam would work so assume it was a mistake.😬. Maybe your order is still OK with DAP but it wouldn’t hurt to have them run your accepted build to see if it’s still there. I think it was May when my Dealer said DAP was NA on all GLE’s, probably other models too.

My build is scheduled late Sept and only thing showing as an issue is dash cam/AR. Dealer told me they would let me know when it was going to lock. I’ve been driving co cars for almost 30 years and have no idea how the MB order process works. Haven’t ordered new car since 1983. Management’s cars have always been off lot. I gave dealer small deposit and have option to cancel if I want.
