Mounting EZ Pass (with AR option)
The other spot is on the right side of the mirror. I didn't put my EZ Pass there because I mounted a dashcam (with GPS) at that location.

Here are four pictures. Three are looking at the windshield at different magnification levels. The other is taken from the inside looking through the windshield with the grid of the RF transparent location.
Zoomed out.
This is the grid in the RF transparent section. The double white rod are the fluorescent lights on the ceiling.
Zoomed in a little bit more.

awesome, Thanks.
You can go to EZPass online and register your license plate. The toll readers/scanners will look up your plate number and bill you as if you used EZPass. If you ever get a violation, which you shouldn't, all you have to do is call them and have them verify your plate is registered. They will remove violation.

Where I am, a decent portion of toll booths still have gates, so without the EZ-Pass, you've got to wait for someone to open it for you.
In other places, if your EZ-Pass doesn't read, they will charge you the toll-by-plate rate which is often higher. For example, the NY Thurway specifically calls this out:
"NOTE: E-ZPass customers who do not properly mount their E-ZPass tag (tag), which results in their tag not reading properly while traveling on the Thruway, will be charged the Tolls by Mail toll rate. The Tolls by Mail rate is 30% higher than the E-ZPass NY toll rate. This is due to the time and cost associated with the process to identify vehicles that do not have the tag properly mounted or not detected in the vehicle."

If your concerned about it, then mount it where the manual states, or get the one that mounts on the license plate, which IMO, is likely to get stolen.
By the way, mine is mounted as manual shows, and I do occassionaly see "TAG NOT READ" when I pass through toll, but never receive a violation, nor higher toll rate. I don't even have a front license plate. GLE looks so much better without it. Well, I do, but it is a "flip" plate that folds up from under the bumper when I need it to.

For the three co-op areas I drive in, there's no transponder, just a small tag applied inside.
I was pretty sure I had found the space in the IR windshield, but my last trip resulted in all license plate detections.
They sent new tags and advise that I put them in the sunroof, at the leading edge.
EZ-Pass has a non replaceable battery that last about 10 years. After that, you might start getting the "tag not read' issue. I have to contact the agency to get a free replacement.

This is why I got the cover for the ez-pass, and mount it at the bottom.
