Mounting EZ Pass (with AR option)

This might be a really stupid question, but I'm being really cautious as I did the ceramic tint on all glass (amazingly happy) and don't want to mess up the windshield trying to pull off EZpass adhesive strip if I place in wrong spot. Since I have the AR option, is there a way to find out if I'm blocking any of the cameras behind the rear view mirror before committing? Would appreciate if anyone with AR and EZpass would share their mounting spot.

We have AR and acoustic glass. Had trouble with having EZ Pass read at tolls, etc even though we mounted at owner's manual recommended spots. Ended up getting the license plate mounted EZ Pass. No more worries.....

I have no issue placing the EZ Pass at the center lower portion of the windshield (I also have the acoustic glass). Take a flashlight and shine it toward the location. You will see the "dotted" area where you suppose to mount the transponder.
The other spot is on the right side of the mirror. I didn't put my EZ Pass there because I mounted a dashcam (with GPS) at that location.

I also put mine in the center lower position, but I never actually stuck it to the windshield. I got one of these

because I dislike the look of the ugly "white" EZPass transponder. The sleeve makes it rubbery black and just leaving it on the upper dashboard, wedged between the windshield, seems to work fine. I occasionally notice it that it moved left or right by a couple of inches (which with the acoustic glass means it probably won't work), but I don't drive EZPass roads that often and nudging it back to the center takes a second.

I have the same sleeve on my EZ Pass. It mounts on the windshield in the sweet spot and basically disappears...much better looking than the white plastic.

It took me too long to find the RF transparent location next to the rear view mirror and I had to get within a few inches of the windshield from the inside before I could see it; I never found the center dash location.

Here are four pictures. Three are looking at the windshield at different magnification levels. The other is taken from the inside looking through the windshield with the grid of the RF transparent location.

Zoomed out.

This is the grid in the RF transparent section. The double white rod are the fluorescent lights on the ceiling.

Zoomed in a little bit more.

Zoomed in max.

I didn't have a problem locating the areas quickly from the outside using my phone light, with the car in the garage.

although another member helped me with my issue regarding this in my GLE 450 I am saying thank you to you for this which I just confirmed because mb phone customer service it horrific now. I did the flashlight method of finding the 2 spots on my windshield so I will be dropping off my plate mount abomination and getting the proper transponder tomorrow. thank you very much.

You don't need to mount it..
You can go to EZPass online and register your license plate. The toll readers/scanners will look up your plate number and bill you as if you used EZPass. If you ever get a violation, which you shouldn't, all you have to do is call them and have them verify your plate is registered. They will remove violation.

While this works fine in some locations, it is a terrible idea in others.

Where I am, a decent portion of toll booths still have gates, so without the EZ-Pass, you've got to wait for someone to open it for you.

In other places, if your EZ-Pass doesn't read, they will charge you the toll-by-plate rate which is often higher. For example, the NY Thurway specifically calls this out:
"NOTE: E-ZPass customers who do not properly mount their E-ZPass tag (tag), which results in their tag not reading properly while traveling on the Thruway, will be charged the Tolls by Mail toll rate. The Tolls by Mail rate is 30% higher than the E-ZPass NY toll rate. This is due to the time and cost associated with the process to identify vehicles that do not have the tag properly mounted or not detected in the vehicle."

I can accpet that some tolls still have gates;; although a little old-school. However, I have 6 members of my family on my NY EZPass account. We all have plates registered, because I was told, years ago, that the max tags on a residential account is 5. I even put myh sister-in-law from NC on there because she travels here now and then. She will occasionally get a violation mailed to her. All I do is call EZpass and they charge me the tag rate and void the violation. HAven't seen any gates in NYC in a while. Doesn't mean they don't exist.

If your concerned about it, then mount it where the manual states, or get the one that mounts on the license plate, which IMO, is likely to get stolen.

By the way, mine is mounted as manual shows, and I do occassionaly see "TAG NOT READ" when I pass through toll, but never receive a violation, nor higher toll rate. I don't even have a front license plate. GLE looks so much better without it. Well, I do, but it is a "flip" plate that folds up from under the bumper when I need it to.

I agree. There's a difference between regions and States that have a cooperative agreement, but all mine charge more with license detection, even though I have my plates associated with my tag. (At least until an email I got from one last week, saying that they can now associate plates with pass tags.)

For the three co-op areas I drive in, there's no transponder, just a small tag applied inside.

I was pretty sure I had found the space in the IR windshield, but my last trip resulted in all license plate detections.

They sent new tags and advise that I put them in the sunroof, at the leading edge.

If you are re-using a old EZ-Pass and its over 10 years old, there is a chance that the battery inside is running low.
EZ-Pass has a non replaceable battery that last about 10 years. After that, you might start getting the "tag not read' issue. I have to contact the agency to get a free replacement.

They replaced all my tags last year. It seems to be one specific toll plaza that gives me the error. It is; however, the most convienent one for me. No impact on me, so it doesn't matter; I just find it odd.

Those things are UGLY, especially in white. Glad we don't have tolling here, but they're talking about it.

Same, especially the reflection on windshield.
This is why I got the cover for the ez-pass, and mount it at the bottom.
