Is this normal???

I was driving last night and noticed the windshield wiper lever on the left side of the steering wheel do not light up like the gear selector on the right. Is this normal or is mine defective? I can't imagine it being normal but what do I know.
If someone can confirm this with their GLE, I'd really appreciate it.

I had the same question on GLB. Never got reply from anyone, but I am glad you confirmed my suspicion that the markings are just painted and do not have internal light.

As I said, if this is normal, MB don't believe it rains at night.

I agree. I was driving one night and it was pitch black and I had to feel for the button to turn the back window wiper on.

Agree, they couldn't come up with a solution they deemed best so they decided to put nothing.

The steering wheel doesn't have lights on it either, but I don't have any trouble finding it at night. Or the gas pedal which is even harder to find than the wiper arm.

I have never owned a car from any brand that has their windshield stalk light up at night, its pretty much a universal control and not difficult to use at all during night. If you think this is so terrible, try using a Tesla which doesn't even offer a windshield stalk and forces you to change it through the screen.

Not all Teslas - my wife's Model S has a stalk for the windshield wipers.

Mainly the new ones that don't use MB switchgear anymore don't. The new Model S and X (2021) is the worst of them all when it comes to the steering wheel controls.

As the car has automatic wipers, is this really a concern?

I was on a 300 mile drive home at night and my windshield was getting really dirty from bug splashes. It was pitch dark and I had some trouble spraying windshield washer and using the wipers. Not all cars have the same wiper controls so I thought it would be nice to have the controls lit up. Not a huge deal but just something nice to have.

It looks like even the Molel 3, which is Tesla's cheapest model, has a stalk also. You can control the wipers from the screen also but it has a stalk none the less.

Yes the Model 3 and Y have stalks still, the S and X however do not anymore since they don't even have a proper steering wheel but rather the stupid yoke.

I agree that it would be nice. Stalks are not the same on all cars and are not even on the same side of the steering column. It would help reduce the time your eyes are off the road. Seems like a small thing to implement.

You can't see it behind the steering wheel so pointless saying you have to take your eyes off the road, I assume you have all just bought your cars as I have no trouble finding the stalk and operating it.

I've had my car for over 2 years now. As I was driving home last night in the dark I took notice that ALL of the other controls on the steering wheel, including the transmission stalk, are lit. There is only one that is not lit. It just seems incomplete to me.

Apparently Mercedes thinks it is more important to have an illuminated grill logo than to light up a universally lit piece of switchgear. I’ve never seen a car without a lit stalk before.

Dodge (1), Toyota (1), Hyundai (1), Honda (1), Mazda (1), Cadillac (1), Volkswagen (1), Volvo (1), BMW (1), Audi (4), Mercedes-Benz (6). These are the car brands I have owned (in that order) since I first got my driver license 30 years ago. None had an illuminated wiper stalk.

Thanks for your inventory.
I drew a blank trying to think of a car I've owned or seen with a lighted stalk.

I even owned a French car with the horn on the wiper stalk, but alas it, too, was dark.

The Genesis GV80 doesn't have a lit wiper control stalk but it has an illuminating one for the headlight control/blinker stalk.

I remember that! Was it a Peugeot 505? 405 perhaps? Or 605? My family went through those at some point, it was great!
