GLE450 vs. another Lexus GX460

We love our 2017 Lexus GX 460 but with 91,000 miles, it’s time for a new SUV. The Lexus has been very reliable, a great car for Northeastern winter travel and very comfortable for 300-400 mile trips. The technology is getting outdated, and it drives like a truck. Another GX 460 would be boring in some ways.

My wife wants to order a new MB GLE 450. The test drive was impressive. Well appointed, more comfortable ride, modern technology. Reliability is very important to us - we don’t want to spend a lot of time at the dealership with service/repair issues.

I queried the Lexus GX forum, and they claim greater reliability and resale over there!!

Thoughts from the MB GLE community are welcome!

We also have a (2013) GX 460 and when it was time for a new SUV we chose the GLE 450. Much better ride and technology. The second row has much more legroom. The interior is far nicer. Reliability and resale will be better with the Lexus, but after one year and 8,000 it has had only minor problems. The Lexus had some problems as well.

We had a 2010 RX350, then a 2014 RX350, now a 2020 GLE350 bought new, now with 22,000 miles. All three, essentially flawless.

Comparing a Lexus GX to a MB GLE is really apples and oranges. A better comparison would be with the RX. I have had four Lexus RX450h's (latest is a 2022) and they were all rock solid. Can't say the same for my GLE. That swinging rear door on the GX was a deal breaker for me.

My wife had an RX350 that wasn’t trouble free but still a decent car. The worst was a known steering column issue that the Dealer couldn’t fix. A TSB came out before warranty expired but by the time I found it on my own it was a month over Warranty and Lexus refused the repair. We got a good price and moved to Audi.
The RX isn’t in the same league as the GLE 450. The GX always seemed more like a much older car than the model age. The engine/drive train hasn’t changed for over a decade until recently.

The only recent changes have been minor facelifts every so often to the spindle grill and interior switchgear/infotainment. The powertrain hasn't changed at all and is still the same 4.6L 1UR-FE engine and 6-Speed auto from the 2010 model which introduced the second-generation of GX.

I mistakenly assumed that the GX series used the same drive train as the Tundra…5.7 liter V8 NA introduced in 2007. It’s now a 3.5 liter twin turbo v6 or v6/hybrid. Either way they aren’t even close to the power trains available in the GLE/GLS series…Engines, ISG, Active Suspension, drive modes, interior customization, etc. IMO, one reason Lexus is reliable is because they offer few choices…a one size fits all approach. Then they keep building the same obsolete vehicle for years with only minor cosmetic changes.

That's the new LX's powertrain. The smaller GX still uses the ancient 4.6L V8 that puts out about as much HP as a modern normally aspirated V6 or turbocharged 4-cylinder. It still swills gasoline like a turbocharged V8, however. It's a proven, reliable engine, but that's where its advantages end.

True, it's old. But that doesn't make it reliable or current.
The problem with an old design, and this Toyota engine is a good example, is that there are so many emissions kluges that are hung on the engine, that it's a dog and gets horrible fuel economy.
I'm an old (previous) Toyota fan, but the current lineup is just too Luddite for me.

What surprises me, too, is that my old ML350 was better off road than that top-heavy SUV with limited wheel travel, at least in the serious stuff.
I also believe that the Unibody construction of Mercedes is superior to the flexible ladder frame for towing. Not to mention handling.
It's even cramped inside, for all it's length and heft.
It's a soccer / grocery getter, that's all. It's OK for that if you get the side steps.

You can only push pre-war designs so far. Not a fan at all. Except I like their white pearl paint.

I had a GX-470 but had to get rid of it when gas mileage got down to 14mpg. I looked at Lexus again when I saw how long it was going to take to get a GLE. One look at that Lexus interior (old and outdated) and I ordered a GLE 450 with a five month wait (May 2021 delivery).
