Question Starter Battery

Our GLE 450 is our second car so we only drive it once or twice a week. Lately, I've noticed on the MercedesMe App, the starter battery status shows "partially charged". Last time I saw this, I drove it a good 50 miles on highway and the battery status showed fully charged. 4 days later, it now says partially charged again.

Should I be concerned with this? I'm due for my A service next month so I'll have them check the battery but was wondering if this is a normal behavior.

Sounds right. Our 19 e class has been doing that on and off since Covid started and we haven’t been driving it as much (wife works at home now). I get an email pop up and in a day or two I just go drive it or run it in the garage (with the garage doors open of course) for several minutes and I’ve never had a problem with it starting. I asked the service people about it and they kind of dismissed the app notices.
Although I’ll probably just replace the battery in the next few months.
Good luck.

In our experience it takes 100 miles or so to get to the point where "partially discharged" doesn't show up regularly.
Seems like a lot of driving, but that's been our solution over the last year. It's not a real problem because the nearest big city is 50 mi away.

Yep, that's perfectly normal. You will get a notification on your phone and an email if the battery charge actually goes critical. My C63 does the same thing as I mostly drive it on the weekend these days. And as said, it takes quite a few miles before it goes to charged and stays there. Most of the time it briefly goes to Charged after the weekend, but come Monday it's back to Partially Charged. The newer cars have constant battery draw, because they maintain an online connection to the cloud, so you can remote lock or remote start them any time and check the status such as among other things the battery state of charge. This doesn't come out of thin air. There is a standby mode (not available in all models) that you can activate if you plan to leave the car parked for a longer duration. It turns off the online services and shuts everything down and as a convenience shows you how long you can keep it parked before the battery needs to be charged. I use this when I go on an extended trip.

I would recommend to take it for a long enough drive before you drop it off for service so that the battery is fully charged. In the past, I've started to get the critical battery notifications while the car was in service and draining the battery, because they were working on it w/o the engine running. I now drive it before service or hook it up to a trickle charger the night before and since then I haven't gotten the notifications anymore during service.

I've gotten the same several times in the last few months. A couple times it even said to pull over and leave the car running (didn't do that). Apparently just driving 30 or 40 miles or so is not enough to recharge it. I have hooked up a charge overnight a couple times which solves it for a while. And apparently it refers to the 12V battery, not the "starter" battery is my take.

The main 12V battery is what it refers to, which is also the starter battery. There's one or more auxiliary batteries to stabilize the power supply to the electronics during engine start, but the main battery is what it is referring to.

The starter is the ISG which is powered by the 48v battery, so not sure what you mean.

Fair point. I didn't think of the 48V system, since my car doesn't have it. Traditionally, the 12V battery is the starter battery and evidently the app doesn't distinguish, either. I guess they need to update the verbiage for the mild hybrid models.

Sorry, I didn’t distinguish 350s as a separate case. Yes, I think the message is just not specifically tailored to the actual vehicle.

Nothing special - a very old Schumacher 50/10/2 amp on the 10 amp setting.

On the 48 volt GLE’s the message refers to the 12 volt battery even though it’s not the starter battery…as Greg said earlier.

One of our remote starters could help remedy this without having to be physically present to do so (so long as the vehicle is parked outdoors / in a well-ventilated area, of course).
