To rotate or not
So, without crashing too many brain cells, is there any benefit to rotating tires side to side on same axel (the tires on front are larger than rears, therefore cannot do traditional rotation)

Yes. Modern traffic management promotes right turns and discourages left turns. Therefore tires receive different wear demands left-right, and tire longevity benefits from left-right rotation. Unless you drive substantially all of your miles on the freeway.

But be aware that some tires are marked Inside and Outside. So those can't be remounted on the opposite side of the same end.

You're right about directional tires though, swapping from one side to the other will reverse the direction. More info for OP: https://www.lesschwab.com/article/wh...nal-tires.html

Rotating side-to-side isn't a bad idea as long as the tires don't need to be dismounted from the wheels to do so. I typically don't rotate side-to-side anymore. I simply shift front-to-rear/rear-to-front for square setups once a year when I swap the winters on/off. For a staggered fitment I leave the tire in the same position for the life of the tire.

I think so, for the four mentioned reasons. Also, when you switch sides, you change the rotation direction of the tire, so wesr is coming from the opposite direction which can help keep tire wear symmetrical.
