The dreaded accident

Why oh why people are so careless. An old lady just clipped my front bumper while she attempted a left hand turn in a parking lot. The sound of the cracking and buckling plastic never gets old. Thank god for the dashcam as it would have been a long argument who has the right of way. Grille is cracked, distronic is cracked, bumper needs repaint, all of the horizontal chrome bits on the bumper got scratched except the two horizontal chrome bits on the right hand side. Plate number holder got crushed and the mesh panel holding the plate got cracked too. The right headlight got moved and was told there is a possibility the plastic bracket might have broke as it is wiggling and if that is the case it needs to be replaced.

I took this as a sign to be able to get a night package front grille so the shop ordered that vs the matte silver grille. Now the pita is the chrome bits as there is no ETA for the parts. So cant do anything but to drive the GLE with a bruised face.

I cant imagine how much the repair cost of this little accident and it might cost more than the value of the vehicle that hit me which is a 2010 Tucson. No matter how careful you drive you just cant escape careless folks. Thank god for the dashcam as there was no argument who's fault it was so yet again the dashcam saved the day. To those who are still thinking dashcams are pointless I am one of those people who will attest these devices will save you from paying costly premiums or possible civil lawsuits from accidents.

Mine came with the built-in 21U Dash Cam. The day we needed it the video quality was useless. I have since installed a Garmin duo on the front and a dedicated separate Anker on the back. It's overkill I know but will leave no doubt about who is at fault.

I don't have the 21U dashcam as when I got my vehicle it was in the middle of the chip shortage but when I saw the actual footage of the camera the regret went away. The only thing that I miss is the heads-up display as the AR/heads-up display/multi-beam are all bundled-up together as a package and that was missing entirely on my build just because of the stupid chips. Did you installed the rear camera? I am trying to figure out how to pull the panels on the back and I just don't have the will to do it as I might break something so right now I have a funny cord dangling down on the back leading to the 12v outlet. The front camera was easily hard wired but I need to learn how to pull the panels at the back before I attempt to do a proper hard wire install at the back camera.

These two posts have some good info and pics on how to mount and hide the wires:

That thread in general is helpful. If you scroll through it, there are more pics of how to route the wire for the rear dash cam through the existing harness tube or whatever its called.

It is fixed now . I'm happy with the night package grille as it cleans up the front and less silver. I think every GLE should be like this. I also asked them not to mount the front license plate frame. Now I need to find a cleaner way to mount my front license plate......

Here is my license plate mount solution: https://mbworld.org/forums/gle-class...ml#post8568428. I think it's cleaner and you can pop it on and off in 5 seconds.

Thanks Greg! Any worries of that thing catching the curb or something or is it high enough? Also if a person accidentally hits it while walking are there any chances of it getting ripped-off or bended? Thanks! If there is a mold similar to the existing mount that just clips and no screws needed that will be great. Maybe it is time to make my own and get the 3D printer working.

I’ve had it on 3 2/3 years and 30k miles and no issues. What I like about mounting it lower is it leaves the chrome feature strip run uninterrupted. I've got 10 3/4 " clear at standard Airmatic height. If off road or in deep snow you can remove it easily,

Looks great! Not sure what state you are in, but quite some time ago I had an MB E420 sedan and lived in Illinois. I didn't want to spoil the front with a license plate, so I just omitted it. I kept the plate and mount in the trunk. I only had one problem over years of driving like that. I left it in a parking lot at O'Hare and came home to a ticket for no front plate. I took some duct tape and made a loop and stuck the plate and frame to the front bumper. I took a picture and sent it in with the ticket and said there must be some mistake. Ticket went away lol.

Looks great!

I just don't run a front plate. In many years of not running it I got one $50 ticket while parked in DC, and thats it.

Looks GREAT!!.

My salesman refused to mount the front plate, and I am so happy he did. Looks much better without it. I live in NJ where it is required, therefore, I installed a "retractable plate flipper" - just google it. Essentially, the plate mounts under the bumper where it is hidden. When you need to display it, you press a button on a remote key fob, and the plate slides out and pops up - see below...

Greg I went for the cheap mode route and modified the front license plate holder. I trimmed the lower section out and moved the entire holder down so that the front cameras wont see it. It will be held by zip ties and 3M double sided tape on the lower section of the bumper. This way there will be zero holes anywhere.

A perfectly good solution that achieves the aesthetics, only lacking quick removal.
