Interior Rattle Survey

I’m curious if I’m the only one driving around in what can only be described as a tin can full of marbles. Anyone care to share their interior rattles and if they are fixed? While this issue is inconsequential in the greater scheme of things, they are overwhelmingly annoying and makes the car feel cheap.

Here are mine:

1. Rear quarter panel behind the rear passenger seat. Fixed.
2. MBUX screen creaks over rough surfaces and body flexes. I can reproduce the sound by simply applying a small amount of force to the screen. It happens a lot more when it’s warmer.
3. Steering column creaks over rough surfaces and body flexes.
4. Header rattle that only occurs if the sun visor is clipped in. If I unclip the sun visor, it no longer rattles, but I don’t believe it is the actual visor or latch. It sounds more internal behind the headliner.
5. Rattle in the rear cargo area. It sounds like it’s coming from the hatch. I haven’t investigated this one yet.

Our GLE 450 SUV had rattles in the upper dashboard along the HUD and MBUX area. The trim piece by the HUD was replaced with new modified piece, but a small rattle continued and I had to apply a small strip of insulation rubber underneath the HUD display area.. The MBUX screen was padded by the dealership again with a rubber strip behind the screen.

No rattles - 2020 GLE450 which had run 19k miles already when we bought it; I have put another 3.5k miles in 2 months. Will update after the year end when I will get back after a road trip.

ONE - Occasionally from rear when hitting a bump. Dropped it off at dealership. They immediately found the issue and replaced BOTH rear shocks. Good ever since.

My Wheel Lock box rattled until I put some fabric in the box to silence it.
My Wife stores quarters in an old cassette tape box, and turning it on edge stopped that rattle.
There was a wire near the sunroof control that wasn't properly secured. Discovered during some high speed trail running, corrected at A Service.

I hate rattles and this car is the best I've owned in that department.

I've had no problems with rattles in this car. Even with the crap roads in Pennsylvania, this car is as quiet as a tomb.

Squeaks and rattles drive me crazy and this is the first car I've owned in a long time that never had any in almost three years of ownership.

At the risk of sounding foolish, where does one find the wheel lock box? I needed a flat plugged on Saturday afternoon, and couldn't find it. Lucky, mechanic was able to get them off without damaging bolts.

Mine was sliding around in the spare tire well. I had already secured and cushioned it, but the internal key still rattled in the plastic box.
Sometimes I wonder why I have them, because they're not very robust, and I don't think they're that hard to defeat. As your mechanic was able to demonstrate.

Mine are at the bottom of the center arm rest compartment. I believe that’s where the dealer put them.

Some dealers put them with the spare tire equipment (jack/lug nut bar)Have you checked the rear floor compartment where the spare tire is stored?

I just picked up a minor rattle. Might be the cargo cover, which I typically don't leave installed.

We had a rattle eminating from the rear wheel well/rear seats area - mentioned at multiple service appointments - finally had the service technician drive with me - found the source which was the rear shocks - replaced - all quiet now.

Do you have a single lock bolt on each wheel? Typically they are "puzzle locks" and can't be removed without destroying them. The regular lug bolts on this vehicle are "Flower" bolts on all 5 lugs and some tire tech's think they are wheel locks which can be removed with a standard 17mm socket. Over time use of a regular socket will damage the "flower" lug and make it difficult to put the socket on etc. The use of a proper "flower" socket will maintain the integrity of the lugs so I keep one in the car. The Mercedes spare tire kit only has a regular 17mm socket so they must accept that "flower" sockets won't always be used.

2021 GLE63, I do have a few rattles I’m battling. I think one is the panoramic roof which I’m going to check today to see if all the bolts are tight. I had a squeak around the HUD display trim and I have something around the rear passenger side that I’m trying to find.
