Broken windshield

Couple of days ago a rock flew into my windshield and created a cross like crack about an inch long. I immediately made an appointment with Safelite to get it repaired but they didn't have an opening for few days.
Well, this morning I noticed the crack had grown to about 12 inches. I know this can't get repaired and I need a new windshield.

My GLE has HUD. So, should I take it to the dealership for the replacement or another shop like Safelite is OK?

The only way I would use them is if they only provide OEM glass. If they can't, go to the dealer.

Go to the dealer. You want that special MB sticker on the windshield on the replacement. Plus they will need to re-calibrate the cameras.

I used Safelite on my X5 with HUD and they provided OEM glass and also recalibrated. However, if dealer is going to charge same price or you have "all glass" coverage from insurance company, then might as well take it to the "pros", your local dealership. I didn't use dealership cause the wouldn't work with my insurance co. and wanted $3,600 up front. I paid $50 to Safelite.

Also, if you purchased a "tire and wheel" replacement package, it might be covered under that, depending which level you chose.

An out-of-town dealer once broke mine whilst changing wiper blades. It was either covered by his or my insurance, but I would only go with OEM glass.

To my knowledge most dealers just sub out glass repair so you may end up with a Safelite repair either way.

With a HUD you absolutely want to replace with OEM glass though.

Yeap. Mine does and then charges you above what insurance will pay even though in my state, insurance covers windshields.

I ordered the windshield through the dealer, along with the little Daimler sticker at the lower right hand corner. According to VIN.
They send it to their body shop, who performs the camera lens and windshield outgassing TSB's, then the main shop does updates and calibration.

I pay the difference between the Safelite cost to the insurance company and the shop bill, just as our State law requires. It was about $200 extra last time for my Acoustic package glass.

Another time, the Dealer allowed a 10% Benz Club discount and it saved the insurance company 50 bucks.
