GLE 350 4MATIC 2022 Steering Wheel Issue - Seeking Insights

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum and reaching out for some advice on an issue I'm experiencing with my GLE 350 4MATIC 2022, specifically with the steering wheel. After noticing a significant dead zone and looseness in the steering, especially at speeds over 60 mph on straight, smooth interstate roads, I took my vehicle to the dealer for a checkup.

Dealer Visit Summary:
  • Mileage: Inspection started at 34,521 miles and ended at 34,533 miles.
  • Initial Findings: Tire pressures and suspension were checked and found to be OK. The dealer identified codes related to steering malfunction/over-temperature.
  • Action Taken: Updated the power steering software and conducted a test drive. The initial complaint was still present after this step.
  • Further Action: They referred to LI46.35-P-072961, reset the steering system's learned values, and then verified the repair with another road test.
Despite these repairs, the issue persists. When driving over 60 mph, handling the car becomes problematic, requiring constant minor corrections to keep it in a straight line. The steering wheel doesn’t get harder with speed increase, which I thought was odd. Additionally, I suspected it might be a wheel alignment issue, so I had that checked and corrected, but the problem remains. I also notice a vibration in the steering wheel and a sensation as if something is rubbing off.

I'm reaching out to see if anyone here has encountered a similar issue or could offer any insights into what might be causing this and potential fixes. I appreciate any guidance or advice you can share, including if there's something specific I should ask the dealership to check or any particular diagnostic steps I should request.

Sorry if I haven't provided enough detail or haven't posted in the expected format; this is my first post here. Let me know if you need more information, and thanks in advance for your help!

What happens when you change modes? Sport vs Comfort.

@BlueYonder Hi. Thank you for replying

In the past, switching to Sport mode significantly tightened the steering feel, offering a distinct contrast to Comfort mode, which was softer and more relaxed. However, recently, I've noticed that changing between these modes doesn't produce the marked difference in steering response I'm used to. Specifically, in Sport mode, where I would expect the steering to be firmer, the steering now has a noticeable play, along with unusual vibrations. This deviation from the expected behavior suggests that the steering system may not be responding as intended, and it feels as though the vehicle is not fully engaging Sport mode in terms of steering dynamics.

You don't happen to be using the steering assist by any chance? That can make the car feel very nervous.

Other than that, start with the basics: have someone looking at the steering shaft/rack/balljoints/wheel bearings while you jiggle the steering wheel. I know you said the dealer checked the suspension, but it's worth a double check, as techs these days barely do more than plug in the diagnostics...

By steering assist, do you mean lane assist? If that's the case, then I do have it activated. I've noticed a cranking sound when I jiggle the steering wheel, but this only happens when the engine is not running. When the engine is running, everything seems fine. I haven't been able to check underneath the car myself for any signs of leakage, but I haven't noticed any oil spots where I park.

Not just the lane assist, I mean the active steering assist (showing a green steering wheel icon on the dash).
From the symptoms you describe, I wouldn't expect there to be a fluid leak, more likely just a loose coupler on the steering shaft or something.
