As for those Blackberry style touchpad things, those were there since the W213 E-Class sedan first came out:https://cars.usnews.com/static/image...eringwheel.jpg

The capacitive sensors around the circumference is a good thing for measuring hands on wheel.

Does anyone with experience know if the "buttons" can tell the difference between resting your finger on them and actually wanting to activate them? I regularly rest my finger on the cruise resume/cancel button activating it only to slow down in advance of traffic. I find distronic+ to be too aggressive most of the time.

Might depend on the steering wheel. I have a version of the one depicted above with the two touchpads and the other buttons being physical buttons and I don't have the capacitive sensors in the rim of the wheel. I can touch the touchpads whenever the Active Steering Assist complains about my hands not being on the wheel to acknowledge that I'm still paying attention. So that pretty much allows me to drive hands free on the highway and I just periodically tap one of the touchpads whenever the visual warning comes up.

All the new ones equipped the same are All over 90 grand and one equipped as much as this one is, are more than 90 grand. I searched new inventory all around me up to 1500 miles away, I could not find one that had everything I wanted. If you find me a fully loaded new one for $73k, let me know. Haha

23% off of msrp ($73k/$95k) for a new 450? I think the most I've read is maybe ~10% off msrp.

Picked up my new to me MY24 450 today! It actually had 600+ miles less than my MY24 350. Let me just say....wow.. It's a HUGE difference. When I pass someone on the highway, it no longer sounds like I'm trying to race them. I will post pics tomorrow!

There really is no replacement for displacement. You can skirt the issue a little with forced induction, but when in practice more is always better unless you're trying to meet regulatory efficiency targets.

I would suspect few buyers of the GLE 450 wished that they had purchased a 350 instead. I personally never considered the 350 after my first test drive, I was coming from a GLE550e and the weaker, buzzy 4 cylinder did not impress me. I also considered the BMW X5. The BMW straight six is a fantastic motor, but the smaller size, lack of an air suspension option, and the tacked on appearance of the instrument panel vs the integrated look of the GLE led me to choose the GLE 450.
Interestingly, the GLE350 gets a different (cheaper) AWD system than the higher-end models like the GLE450 and above. A simple 50/50 split and a brake-based transfer syste. When people hear the term "4Matic", they tend to think they are all the same, but even within the GLE range, there's a stratification in the AWD system used, depending on if it is a GLE350 or whether it is a GLE450 and above.

To the OP's question, when my E450 All-Terrain Wagon was in for its Service-B, I got a C-class loaner sedan, which I believe has the same drivetrain as the GLE350 (4-cyl turbo with 48V) and that thing was a total dog. Press the gas pedal and essentially nothing happens, vis-a-vis the E450 that I was used to. By the end of the day, I got used to it, but by golly I was glad to be back in the E450, when it was ready to be picked back up, and for the loaner to be returned back.

For the GLE, I personally would never opt for the 4-cylinder, even though for the GLC, it may be a good option. And to add insult to injury, many of the GLE350s that I see on the dealer lot, has the bigger 315mm wide tires in the rear on 21" wheels.....the last thing that dog would need, would be wider tires !

Another interesting finding from me, when it comes to my 2 MB vehicles (The 2022 E450 All-Terrain Wagon, which comes standard with the Air suspension, and the 2024 GLE450, where I deliberately skipped the air suspension - I intend to keep both cars for 10+ years).

The entire functioning of the air suspension is done by the 48V system. In other words, raising the 5000lbs car, controlling individual wheels, pumping in the air into the individual air-chambers of the 4 wheels etc. A LOT of heavy duty work.

Now when it is a car WITHOUT the air-suspension, the 48V can skip all of that heavy-duty work, and function towards improving the mileage of the vehicle, by working with the Gas engine. This is EXACTLY what I am finding, where in the GLE450, the mileage is surprisingly good, which I presume is since the 48V system is fully engaged in contributing to the drivetrain itself, rather than in tinkering with an air suspension that tries to constantly lift/lower/manage a 5000lbs beast.

And to be quite honest, I don't miss a beat between the ride in my Air-suspension equipped E450 All-Terrain, and the Selective Damping suspension of the GLE450. Both of them ride equally well, as far as I am concerned.

Here was what Mercedes stated, in their Presskit for the GLE:

With the four-cylinder engine in the new GLE 350, 4MATIC all-wheel drive is realized with a transfer case which transmits the drive torque to the axles in a fixed ratio of 50:50 percent. Spinning wheels are addressed by braking intervention at the relevant wheel.

A transfer case with an electronically controlled multi-disc clutch is used for the other engines, including the GLE 450. This allows a variable transfer of drive torque from 0-100% (torque on demand) between the axles.

Tires also make a difference but are you talking about e-ABC?

No the 48V system is what powers the functioning of the regular Airmatic suspension, even without the e-ABC. The e-ABC would simply add even more load for the 48V system.

So in a car that does not have the airmatic suspension, but has the 48V system, the 48V system can work exclusively on providing supplemental power to the regular gas engine of the car, than managing the lifting/lowering/pumping-air into the air suspension of a 5000lbs beast, which in my experience, has a direct impact on the mileage of the vehicle.

I see.

Just curious, what kind of MPGs are you seeing city /Hwy and total avg for both of your vehicles?

No one should be spending 95k on a 450 to begin with...

My 2020 stickered at $88k, and with its equipment and performance, it was a value compared to competition. Porsche, Audi, Range Rover etc.
I paid $82 for a CPO with 8,000 miles. It was a press car.
It had been wrung out, and it was super fast. Traction control kicked in until it shifted into 2nd gear, and it got 32-33 mpg highway, 24 city. Makes me question "gentle break-ins."
Unfortunately it was one of the 2020 lemons and I sent it back.

My 24 350 was 80k... If I'm touching 90's i'm going Cayenne no questions asked.

I think gentle break ins could go either way tbh

The jump to a 450 from a 350 is ~$10k so your $80k 350 would have been a $90k 450.

If you're jumping over to Cayenne, it would be very basic, and another $10k premium above a GLE 450.
