Where's the battery in the gle

Hi
Went to go jump my sons car that had been sitting for months and it wouldn't start. Opened up the hood of our GLE and what do you know...... Can't see a battery anywhere to connect too. My husband who owns an f series Lexus, cussed out the German car maker for not having a visible battery! Anybody know where it is exactly?

Main battery is under RT. Frt. seat. AUX battery is in the RT. Rear panel in cargo area. To answer your question, under hood is a Ground post & a Red Plastic Door covering the POS post. Your owners manual is your Husbands Friend

A gaggle of MB's
Be CAREFUL on using any modern MB as a jump-donor - as with any modern luxury car there are too many electrical circuits at play/exposed/at-risk is there is a mistake during the jump..

Agreed fabbrisd1. On any modern car the warning applies. So STRICTLY follow the directions in the owners handbook!

That diagram and the accompanying instructions refer to "receiving" a jump from another vehicle. Short of removing the front seat, is there a way to use the GLE as the jump vehicle? A negative ground post is NOT the same as a negative battery terminal. If I'm wrong or missing something, please feel free to correct me.

There are jumping terminals under the hood on the passenger side. My feeling is if you have to ask probably best you not be jumping anything.

I know that. You failed to comprehend my last post. Those posts are for "receiving" a jump. What about giving a jump to someone else? The manual makes no mention of this. That negative post is actually nothing more than a "ground". It's NOT a negative battery terminal, which would be needed to give a jump to another vehicle.

Whether receiving or giving a jump it's the same under hood procedure that alextclam posted.

Thank you! I wonder why they DON'T EVEN MENTION using your car as a jump donor. Have you actually done this?

I've done both way jumps with my 15 year old E55 from under the hood because the battery is under the rear seat. A few months ago I had to jump my dead 2016 E63 from my 2002 E55. I rarely drive the E63 and Mercedes cars drain the battery quick if not being driven. Now I have a battery trickle charger on the E63.

Except for the 60's VW Beetle, can't think of any car that would use a postive ground system.

All negative "ground" system now, but since it's DC anyways...ground has little meaning.

You should also use the posts under the hood for charging your battery if needed.

Would the under-hood posts be the location to use for attaching a trickle charger?

Yes, under the hood on the passenger side there will be a plastic Red slider to reveal the positive terminal, then about 10" or so away near the frame is a perfect negative terminal. The negative terminal isn't labeled but it's pretty obvious what it's for...usually a little golden colored. But any piece of metal directly attached to the car's frame can serve as the negative terminal. These work for the trickle charger.

With the post under the hood serving as the negative battery terminal, electrically it should be as good for the negative post connection when serving as a donor vehicle. Just as well since negative posts like that go to the vehicle frame the same as when using a good unpainted metal surface to connect to negative cable to on the dead battery vehicle.

It may be that jumping cars that involve alternative battery locations like Mercedes uses hasn't forced reputable sources to update procedures to reflect these types of battery installations.

However, someday all cars could go the same route and move batteries to protect them from impact which also climate controls them to some degree as well. I saw a VW Passat years ago that while the battery was still in the engine compartment is was mostly under the dashboard. I believe the car had posts separate from the battery itself to jump with, so while still a German vehicle, MB isn't alone in moving batteries away from typical locations up front.

+1
My 1979 Porsche 928 had the battery below the spare tire well at the back.
All the way to 1993.
