Homelink/Garage door opener question

I noticed that my 2017 GLE garage door buttons under the visor will not operate without either turning on the vehicle or powering up (without starting engine), is this normal? All my previous vehicles didnt require me to do this, do I by any chance have a faulty visor?

That is correct. Must have power for home link to work on all Mercedes models.

Thanks for confirming, I'll consider this a safety feature then since this way even if someone breaks the window in the car they wont be able to get into the garage.

Go get you a good external remote that matches your garage door lift. I haven't used the home link in any of my past 3 MBs. You will thank me later.

The homelink is a pain to program with rolling codes on many of the garage door openers. My dealer was willing to come to my home and program our cars.

I've been looking for a little retirement job between rounds of golf. I'm gonna stop by the local high-end dealerships to see if they need someone to come to folks' homes to do this.....

I'll pay you $20 (somewhat negotiable) a car to program mine. But, you must offer a warranty and everytime it forgets the code, you have to come reprogram it.
Please?
I guess you will give me my money back after about a month.

The first thing I did after getting my GLE home was to program homelink, couldn't wait to not have to carry the garage door opener in the vehicle anymore. Took me a few tries but once I got it programmed I was really , that's until the next morning when I was ready to head out to work and pressed the button while the vehicle was inside the garage and nothing happened.

I'll just have to remember to use the button on the wall to open the garage door first before heading over to the car while parked inside, should get used to that soon enough.

When I set mine- it took a few tries and then it worked.
I also set the rolling code type with one of my family members. That also took a few tries. But it works also. The key to the rolling code type is to get to the garage door opener and press the "learn" button within 30 seconds of setting it in the car.

I was able to program the homelink in my W212. I took my iPad to the car, and watched the MB video step by step to program the darned thing. Worked just fine after that. For whatever reason, never bothered to program the homelink in an A6 I used to own.

Does homelink program to home alarms as well or just garage door openers?

I know they make a light switch that can be operated from a Homelink button. Beyond that I think you need a system that could be controlled from your phone.

I messed with the homelink in my new GLE over the weekend and couldnt get it to set up. I t was frustrating, but a similar experience when I set up my wifes homelink in her car a few years ago. It took me several tries before getting it right.

General Instructions for all Homelink Systems

These are the instructions I've used for years for multiple cars and multiple garage door openers, rolling and fixed codes.

For first time training, press and hold the two outer HomeLink® buttons, releasing only when the HomeLink indicator light begins to flash, which may take up to 20 seconds. This clears any previous codes. Do not perform this step when training the additional HomeLink buttons.

Position the hand-held transmitter 1-3 inches away from the HomeLink surface, keeping the HomeLink indicator light in view.

Using both hands, simultaneously press and hold both the desired HomeLink button and hand held transmitter button. DO NOT release until the HomeLink indicator light flashes slowly and then rapidly. When the indicator light flashes rapidly, both buttons may be released. The rapid flashing indicates successful training.

On the garage door motorhead, press and release the learn code button. The red LED will begin to blink.

Get back into your vehicle and press the desired HomeLink button one time.
Press the desired HomeLink button a second time.
Press the HomeLink button a third time. You should see the garage door open/close. HomeLink programming is now complete.
