2021 GLE63 winter wheel/tire options

Has anyone tried buying this winter wheel/tire combo shown on MB website https://www.mbusa.com/en/winter-whee...ire-assemblies
Tire Rack says they don't have specs of OEM wheels/tires so they can't recommend/offer anything. Anyone have any suggestions?

I bought my winter wheel setup from the UK to the US from alloywheelsdirect.com I only had to pay $184 import fee and saved a bundle for my 2017 winter setup from Tax and other fees.

The Pirelli Scorpion Winter tires are probably going to perform the best for the weight of the vehicle and size of the tires. I used them in Colorado in 2019 throughout the snow and ice. Other than an uphill ice slope, I had ZERO issues with traction, even through thick snow. Traction control never kicked in.

Curious if you figured anything out with the winter wheel/tire setup.

My stepfather is trying to buy a 2021 GLE 63 AMG, and all the ones available in New England have summer only tire . The dealers are no help with finding winter options. I work at a local garage and checked with our vendors, but because it's a new model nothing is available.

Funny you should ask. The short answer is that I placed an order for custom Vossen wheels just yesterday.

The long answer is that I spent way more time than I should have looking into this. I posted the same question on the GLE forum and received a ton of very helpful info from some very knowledgeable people (https://mbworld.org/forums/gle-class...gle63-suv.html). I called in person or chatted on line with a bunch of after market places and no one had the specs for the car, as you learned. Tirerack became very defensive when I asked why they were in no rush to figure this out, Vossen switched me to a different chat person who never picked up, etc. My car has 22" wheels and I thought I would be clever and buy a set of the 21" standard wheels, knowing they would definitely fit. Apparently, there are only 3 available world wide but alas, I do not own a tricycle. Buying an extra set of the 22' wheels would have been very expensive and no one seems to make snow tires that fit that size wheel anyway. I found several European MB accessory websites (no US one) that display all the wheels you can get for an MB and tried to find one with the approximate specs of the standard 21" wheel. Of course, not even the MB websites have the car in it's "does it fit" database and my VIN was "invalid." Out of the 9 that seemed remotely close, only one was available and was very expensive. Kudos to my SA and his parts guy for checking. I gave Vossen chat another try and they "guaranteed" that their wheels would fit as they're custom made. I hope they have a random GLE63 laying around to confirm all the measurements. In any event, they directed me to a local Vossen retailer and the guy there also guaranteed me the wheels would fit. I placed an order for the "hybrid forged" wheels (their true forged ones would have cost almost as much as the expensive MB wheels), paid a deposit and will now wait 4-6 weeks for the wheels to come in. I went with the size of the factory 21" wheels, mostly because tires are available for it and people were very concerned that 20" wheels may not clear the brakes (lots of controversy and info on that issue also on the GLE forum I mentioned above). I probably should have gone straight to custom wheels instead of spending all the time that I did. Now just keeping my fingers crossed that everything works out.

Should mention that someone else in the above mentioned forum went with Vossen wheels which is why I gave Vossen another try.

Thanks for all the info!

I actually came across your other thread and went through that as well. It sounds like we've pretty much gone down the same avenues. I have an 80 vette I just had custom wheels made for, so I've been down this road, but it's much more difficult with a new car that I also don't actually have my hands on. With my car I was able to pull the wheels and measure exact width and backspacing that I wanted. I had the same plan as you for the 21's, because like you said, there are very limited tire options in the factory 22" tire sizes. I also floated the idea of buying an extra set of the 22" wheels, but again like you said, warned him that it would be an expensive move and probably take just as long to get them. I went to the MB parts site using the link you posted to the MB winter wheel/tire package and messaged that vendor to try to get more info on application and availability.... we'll see if I actually hear back.

What boggles my mind is these New England dealers (my stepfather has called a few now) are content with sitting on these cars until spring. They "won't" sell them during the winter months because they're "unsafe" under 50* (which I disagree with), but they also won't offer any alternative solutions. My stepfather had a 2013 S550 I sold for him, he currently has a 2015 GL 550, both bought from our local MB dealer that's in the town we live in....point being, he's a good customer.... and he needs to make this purchase by the end of the year.... yet they can't be bothered to figure out a solution and make the sale. Seems crazy to me, but I guess business must just be really good for them.

So I guess looking into custom wheel options is the best move at this point. Any chance you can send me the info on the wheels you ordered?

Thanks again!

Ah yes, the MB wheel/tire package I started the thread with apparently never existed or must have sold out within minutes. It's a crazy good price for MB factory wheels with Pirellis, maybe even too good to be true. I got Vossen HF3 in satin black, 21x9.5 for front and 21x11 for rear. My car is Selenite grey with night package. Vossen will figure out the ET. Local retailer will put Pirelli Scorpion winter tires on them, after he makes sure the wheels fit comfortably over the brakes. By the way, the car is either at the VPC or at the dealer right now and I don't have time to pick it up until end of the month. That's why I couldn't just take the wheels off and measure everything. The price I paid for the wheels is comparable to what most of the on line retailers are offering for the same sizes. I chose to go through a local authorized retailer so things can be made right with less hassle if there's an issue, plus the guys there were very friendly and helpful. Good luck! It's an incredible vehicle and of all the cars in its segment that I test drove, it had the best combination of speed, handling, comfort, and size.

Awesome. Just curious...why did you go with 9.5" wide in the front instead of 10" like the factory size?

Do you have the name of who you dealt with at Vossen, or did you mostly deal with your local dealer? My stepfather bought the car yesterday so I need to get going on getting the wheels. I had him check out the site and he's thinking of going with the HF5 in matte black.

I think the chat person's name was Jereme. He referred me to a local dealer. Creepy, but he knew roughly where I live without my telling him. When my local dealer called to place order, I think Jereme answered and they seemed to know each other. Jereme also knew who I was from doing the on line chat with him. I was told that the HF line does not come in 21x10 and that 21x9.5 would be better than 21x10.5. The matte looks almost chalky in real life. I was told that one could place order now and then has up until about 2 weeks before completion to make a final color decision. Maybe if you mention to Jereme that I indirectly referred you, he'll put a rush on my wheels.

I have the Continental AWS Extremecontact tires on mine (New England, first winter experience with my GLE 63S), and although no serious snowfalls yet, driving on about 4 - 6 inches of slushy snow, they performed incredibly well. It stops on a dime, no ABS pulsing or skidding...nothing. As I said, deep snow may provide a different experience, especially with the 21 inch tires.

Vossen HF5 in Satin Black

I had the 22 inch Conti summer only and went with Michelin MO All Season Vossen 9.5 wide front 11 wide rear. Don't want or need winter tires as we are snowbirds.
