Question about aluminum roof rails, and a request

When will the aluminum roof rails become available in Canada? And also, anyone here have a GLK with the Bi Xenon likes want to post a picture/video of how it works (or what it looks like when the washers come up).

Much appreciated.

I have the headlight package (xenon).
Night driving is great.
The high beams are like driving at high noon on a sunny day...ok a bit of a stretch.
The cornering lights are cool (a single fog light will turn on with a left or right turn)
I was told after five windshield washer cycles on the same ignition cycle the headlight washers pop up and spray.
I will see if I can get a helper to shoot some YouTube video.

Aluminum roof rails were only available on initial launch, and are no longer available.

Yes the aluminium roof rails are discontinued. My dealer told me that the screws that mount them to the roof are the same ones used in the ML chrome rear bumber panel. If you look at any ML setup that way, you will see rust lines from those screws. Apparently MB was not willing to risk it after seeing that since its a roof mount.

I haven't gone to the Canadian MB site but the aluminum roof rails still show to be in the appearance package in the US. We love the look of the roof rails so I surely hope they again become available up in the Great White North.

Sadly they aren't, on my order back in Jan a memo was sent to all dealers. They changed the appearance package with a different code for the black rails. Rumors that I have heard are the rusting, short supply, mercedes changed their minds, etc.

Wow..I didn't know they were that rare/hard to get.
When I ordered mine, he told me that they're not available anymore. But, I asked him to try his best and get it (as that was a huge selling point of the Sports Package for me). As a result, he phoned me back the next morning & said that he was able to get the aluminum roof rail.

I'm not sure if you can still get it or not...but I wouldn't completely lose hope..if you really care about it, try again!

^ When did you order it? My dealer checked on 2/27 and confirmed that aluminum rail was not available.

I bought mine in mid February..maybe about 2 weeks before you. That probably makes a difference in getting and not getting it???

I was just at the dealership tonight and specifically asked the salesman.

In Canada the roof rails are BLACK...from February 2009 on...
The early launch GLKs had the sport package with aluminum roof rails.
The salesman indicated it was a supplier issue in Europe.

I asked about the rusting screws...the salesman showed me the ML with the rusting screw issue at the front lower protection plate...but the GLK (and ML) roof rails are fastened from the interior.

You can order Bi-Xenons as an option in Canada.

You cannot get aluminum roof rails as of Feb 2009. I ordered mine in Ferb, and they confirmed black only now.

I have heard the supplier issue mentioned a few times, but I also heard possible concerns about rusting in the long run.

The GLK's at the dealership I bought mine from now are coming in with black roof rails. The first batch came in aluminum.

That's very weird. consider the price of Al has been dropping since 08, there isn't a reason for shortage of Al supplies....

plenty of Aluminum does not mean plenty of aluminum roof rails. If the supplier does not have capacity to produce enough, it does not really matter that there is a lot of raw material unless another supplier steps in. Issues like this are quite common, when supplier has good product but can't mass produce it. 19 inch wheels on new audi A4 was one of the recent examples. Could not get them for 6 months.

I just finalized my order because I have been waiting for the Keyless Go option. My sales have been able to get the al roof rail in my order. Apparently this option is available on and off depends on supply. It just happened that when he keyed in the order, the al roof rail was available.

Do any US future owners have any info on this?
I can't see them pulling these rails from the Canadian market without it affecting the lower 48 states...

what info are you looking for? In US, you can't order these rails separately. its part of the appearance pkg with 20" included. There were no shortages, atleast up until March when I purchased.

Web I think you guys aren't affected. When I ordered on Jan. 28, as told of shortage, and the have changed the appearance package code. After Feb productions, all cars have Black rails.

I got the Alum Roof Rails, and I picked my car up 2 weeks ago. I called my sales guy just to get a lil more info, and he said they come with the sports package. Said he has not heard of any recalls, shortage, or rust on them or the screws. There simply just part of the package he said.

Somebody correct me if i'm wrong, didn't the Canada version come with tilting, folding mirrors? Guess we'll call it a trade off if true. However, I would have liked the tilting, folding mirror feature.

i think its a trade off for buying into the "appearance pkg" for the US. We are paying a bundle and the dealers are ordering them almost as default. So I think MB might give preference to US. Meanwhile, all the Xenon kits went to Canada. Seany, I still can't get over how great those HID looks...
