Bluetooth cellular - car's role?

When I'm in the GLK and engaged in an ordinary cell phone call via the bluetooth system, what is the role of the GLK? I understand that its speakers, mic, displays, and control buttons are involved, but what about that roof antenna? What's actually communicating with the cell tower - is it still the cell phone or is it the car? I'm thinking that if it's the car, then I ought to have a lot more "bars" than with the cell phone itself inside the car.

When I picked up my GLK the salesman offered to synch my phone to the GLK. Until then I wasn't really aware that bluetooth was a standard GLK feature, but wow, from now on it's bluetooth for me!

No GLK's antena doesn't serve as extention of the cell phone antena. It's merely built in hands free device.

NYCGLK, well said...

The cellphone still determines the strength of the signals.

bluetooth in the car is just like a massive, multifunctional bluetooth "headset"

the "shark" antenna is for your GPS/Sat Radio

My MINI has an iPhone/iPod cradle connection in the armrest for a direct connection for power, for iPod controls, and for direct connection to one of the vehicle's antennas. Since I have an iPhone 3GS now, the power doesn't work but everything else does. I haven't read through the manual for the GLK but it would be neato if MB had the same thing so their is better tx/rx due to the phone being in the glove compartment.

Yes and yes - those two pretty well sum it up.

Oh, one other thing to add: if you have speed dial numbers set on your phone, the COMAND control panel can use those. Just press and hold "2" on the dash to do an ET (I programmed 2 to dial my home).

1 works for voicemail.

You can also use the Linguatronic and say "dial 2" or "phone 2" (can't remember off the top of my head whether it is dial or phone). I am a cunning linguist :-)

^^of course cuz pressing button in GLK when it's connected to the phone is the same thing as pressing button on the phone...hehe, in other words if you press and hold 2, glk tells your phone to press and hold 2, so speed dial is activated on your phone.
