I put 18's but I think I'm the only one that went with 18's so far... all the other guys on here were 17's... in the Canadian Winter Tire thread..

I put 18's cause for looks only.. thought 17's would look way too small..

Yeah that's what i figure also but I am leaning toward 17s for the smoother ride. The roads here can get pretty nasty in the winter months so I think the higher profile tire may feel and perform better. That and 18in Nokian Hak Rs are stupid expensive...

I put 18" Mich Xi2's on mine.. 18's are smooth the profile is 60 already... you must be used to driving a caddy or sumtin.. although I was driving a lowered /slammed TL on 40 profile tires before.... where are u from?

JT01, the majority of us went with MB recommendation of 17". Let me know if you have any questions.

I wasn't sure if you could put 60s on 18in wheels for the GLK. The recommended was 55s for 18s and 60s for 17s so I was making a choice between those two options.

I'm in Edmonton... ruts in the winter and pot holes in the summer... the streets here blow year round.

Thanks, G.

Why does MB recommend the 17s?

I went with 235/55r17 Nokian Hak Rs on Slotted 5 Spoke MB Replicas (black & machined) from Kal Tire.

All and all a little pricier than the Tire Rack option but I like Kal Tire (I have always purchased my tires from there). The premium really is due to the Nokian tires... they are expensive but the best winters IMO.

They will be mounted next week... now we just need some snow!

R17 with a higher profile doesn't look bad at all...before I went to get mine, I actually walked through the entire parking lot here in Yorkdale. The result is, even on much larger car like some GM and Cheys, 16'' with higher profile looks just good. Plus, someone told me in winter, smaller the better....isn't it?

Blizzak WS60 235/60R17 tires and Sport Edition ST3 17x8 wheels.

Bonus: the MB centre caps fit the Sport Edition ST3's perfectly. Looks like a set of OEM wheels.

I don't think MB makes the 18" for the GLK, hence no option. In regards to the size, MB recommends 235/60 R17. Just a heads up there....

Got the Nokian Rs SUV last year and you're going to love them!! I do love the Blizzaks on the ML 55 however (17 inchers) , but the Nokian are also a great tire!!! Note that the Nokians are made out of canola oil rather than being petroleum based and are better at really cold temps than most snows!!

Exactly my point G.. to each their own.. im simply letting people know there are other options other than the Benz 17" recommendation.

Benz also recomends that I take my truck in for a $300 oil change.. but that isn't happening. lol

Winter Tires - 17" Or 18", steel or aluminum

Hi all,

Just joined this forum.

I bought a new 2008 RX400h last April. I live in Montreal and need winter tires, but don't want to pay the $3500 quoted by the Dealer. This price includes new rims, tires, sensors, and taxes.

Questions:

- can I install 17" on steel rims, (knowing that I cannot use sensors in steel wheels)? Will I face any major problems?

- how about installing 17" on aluminum rims with sensors?

- and finally, if I have to install 18" on aluminum with sensors, can Costco (or similar outfits) mount the tires and the sensors properly?

Thanks.

You need the Lexus forum, not the Mercedes Benz forum. Best of Luck.

I just got my Yokohama IG Geolander 235/60R17 s on yesterday. Mounted them on some used ML 17" rims. All I have to say is HELL YEAH!!!! These babies rocked the storm yesterday in Montreal. I couldn't be happier.

The clowns I used for snow clearing this year (Avalanche) seem to be off the ball, but it was no problem getting in or out of my driveway with these tires. Plus I got em each for $200 plus $60 install on the rims, which I also got for $100 each.
