Nothing too serious, but wanted to ask you guys something:

How difficult would it be to convert the star on the hood of the GLK to a classic star hood ornament. I love the old style and i'm wondering if its possible for the GLK?

I suppose it would not be difficult? If the base of the ornament is the same size as the original badge, then it should be a straight replacement

 

Just remember that if you live in the USA, those classic emblems are now illegal on newer MB's (even if they flex)... and your insurance co. may not cover you if you accidently hit someone and the emblem rips them up as they roll over your hood... look it up.

 

No. There is no US law against Hood Ornaments.
There really is no law against them in Europe either, but there are certain pedestrian safety standards that must be met. Most manufacturers have done away with them in Europe to help meet these standards...... and why build different hoods?
Two manufacturers that I know of that still has the Hood Ornament is the current Maybach and RR.
Mercedes and Jaguar surprised me because, like RR, their hood ornaments are/were Icons.

I'm in Canada btw. I love the old classic emblem and if there was a mod for the GLK, i would definately get it. If anyone has any ideas of how todo it, please let me know. I agree with Red, the old classic ornaments were icons. My dad used to say...its not a mercedes if it doesnt have the emblem, and as much as a i like the truck, i wish it was still on the hood.

 

i've seen both a glk and c350 where the flat hood emblem were replaced by the star emblem and in my view it looks tacky.

I thought about this one too then realized there's a huge MB star emblem on the grill already and adding one on the hood would just be overkill.

 

This againt the law and safety standards thing is ridiculous. I was in my dealership yesterday and every 2010 E350 4matic had the raised star hood ornament.
If you like it, go for it. Should be an over the counter item at the dealer.

 

I tired to get 1 from the dealer, but no luck. The problem is, that on the 08 C class, you can access the ornament from under the hood. However, on the GLK, there is no access from the bottom side, and i believe its not deep enough for the spring to fit inside. No way of mounting it without holding the spring from the bottom. any other ideas? maybe there is a magnetic emblem?
