VIM-Who's done it?
Probably the one thing that really bugs me with this vehicle is that I can't enter things into the GPS while driving. A lot of times my wife and I are together and the passenger is working the GPS. After having a kenwood/garmin setup for 5 years and being very used to being able to do it I really want to install the VIM module. I'm fairly good with stereo work and I watched the video on the C class install and it looked pretty straightforward but I was hoping at least one person had done it with our GLK's.
Also I know a lot of us have had problems with Ipods not charging. I ordered the Scosche adapter but now I'm worried I will lose functionality. Will it work like normal but charge as well?

I have done a couple of hundred by now for our local dealers. I could walk you through any issues you might have.
Although it is pretty straightforward.

Yes, there were issues with ipods not charging, locking up, etc. but I think they have worked them out by now. I have a friend who was able to make an adaptor for my iPhone. He's a wunderkind when it comes to this stuff. I don't know where you are, but if you like I could ask him to help you out?

I guess the main thing I would need to know is how to get into the stereo itself. Does the main face just pop out like most vehicles? Any special tools that I will need?

Drove from Toronto to get one installed from Mid City Engineering in chicago, have to admit, they did an amazing job (love the ability to watch dvds). They even did it for me on a sunday at 8pm and it only took them 30mins. I would highly recommend them for the install as well if you are in the chicago area.

Sorry for my ignorance but is VIM Video In Motion?, I'm considering ordering the iPod intergration kit because I can't find anyone in Canada or the US that has the "Code 518" option Media Interface kit, I only found it in the UK for close to $600 CAD plus shipping and + duties and taxes. I've searched many forums but no luck. Is the newer version of the iPod/iPhone integration better ? A2048704496 which replaces A2048704194, I have the Audio 20 with 6 Cd changer.
Thanks

I don't have GPS in my GLK (but do in my CLS550.) Could someone please clarify what "things" one cannot enter in the GLK's GPS? Does that include Destinations for the GPS Navigation? I hope not.

You can enter things in the gps but must be stationary while doing so. The VIM basically tricks the car into thinking the car isn't moving so you can do whatever you want, including watching dvds on the go.

Yes, its video in motion. It won't work with the UMI as that doesn't have a dvd player, does it?

I may be the only one who thinks that the VIM is a bad idea for watching DVD's while the car is in motion but if your problem is with the GPS then try this. Use voice commands. The GPS can be programmed while the car is in motion by using the one single button on your steering wheel.
I would suggest that before you try it you spend 5 minutes in a quite location training your system to recognize your voice. It works well once you get the hang of it. You can change from the radio to the phone to navigation etc. with just the touch of a button.

Generally I agree with you mkenm, I've no problem using the voice commands when in motion. My wife, however has a pretty strong South African accent ... when she tries to use voice commands, the street names that pop up on the list are pretty entertaining!

I am sure that the system would have some difficulty understanding an accent if it has not heard it before. Unfortunately unlike the vehicle having multiple presets for seat and mirror settings it can only recognize one set of voice commands.

My question is, who has installed the HDTV tuner? I've always wondered why mbusa omits this option in the US. I want it. Does anybody here have it?

Some notes on HDTV tuners:
We have been installing a lot of them, but there are caveats:
1. Regular HDTV Tuners in the U.S. WILL NOT work while in motion due to the doplar effect on the signal.
2. Broadcaster have to broadcast in the ATSC-M/H standard the gives extra information for the tuner to assemble the feed while in motion. Many many stations in the U.S. have moved to the standard and more are doing so each month.
3. The ATSC-M/H tuner is the only thing that will work while in motion (we carry them if interested). However, the M/H tuners will not receive plain ol' HDTV signal that does not have the M/H information added.
Bottom line: HDTV tuners for cars have been around for a couple of years, but only work while the antenna is moving less than 5 MPH (nothing to do with the car, won't work if on any platform moving that fast or above). The newer tuners (ATSC-M/H) work while going at any speed up to about 90 MPH and receive only the channels that have already upgraded the broadcasting equipment. In Atlanta, we have 8 terrestrial HDTV channels and 4 of them (as of March 2011) have upgraded the equipment so far (since the standard was ratified in June 2010).

Good info. I've searched around and have found that Atlanta now has 5 with ATSC-M/H:
WSB(ABC), WXIA (NBC), WPXA, WGCL (CBS), WATL

I will definitely look into getting this. It will be around May.
Stay tuned

Hell, I barely watch TV at home. The last thing I want is to have that drivel following me around when I'm in my car!

There are enough distractions, other drivers, cell phone etc. How could anyone want to have TV or a DVD playing while you are in motion.

For me it's more about my passenger(s) than for me if I'm driving. I will listen to it though and occasionally glance over but that's it. I will say it helps keep you awake because your brain processing is what's happening in the movie rather than go numb on a long drive. I've been doing it for 5 years with no problems.
Honestly just having the ability to have the passenger do whatever they want with the Command system while I'm driving is the main driving force with me wanting to get it.

Just a note on the Ipod-the Scosche charging adapter works perfect and there is no loss of functionality. Only $18 on amazon too. Haven't ordered the VIM yet but a buddy just put one in his girlfriend's C class on Monday and said it was pretty easy. I will probably order one pretty soon.
