Aftermarket Remote Starter on 2013 GLK

Has anyone installed an aftermarket Remote Starter on their 2013 GLK?

I saw the Compustar Mercedes-DC (http://www.compustar.com/mercedesstarter/) but really don't know if that would void warranty and who would install this in the Alberta, Canada region. For those who say "Why install a remote starter...just get in the car cold and start it?"....I say, come up here for a nice -30ºC winter night and start my car and then let me know what you think.

Thanks.

"Why install a remote starter...just get in the car cold and start it?".... Well, no need for installing it in our GLK, as it has the DEFA WarmUp (http://www.defa.com/en/automotive/warmup/ )

I haven't seen on any 2013s so far, however on a 2011: https://mbworld.org/forums/glk-class...impressed.html .

Information about Remote Starter on another thread as well: https://mbworld.org/forums/glk-class...r-starter.html .

That's interesting as no one (including 2 separate sales guys at dealers) has mentioned this yet? Looks like this system needs to be plugged in via block heater to work??

I also sent an email to the people at DroneMobile (Computstar) and here was the response:

"Thank you for contacting Firstech. The Drone Mobile does indeed work with the 2013 GLK350. It will require the installation of one of our Mercedes modules. The Mercedes module will include the necessary parts to retain the KeylessGo feature. The Mercedes module is specifically designed to work with your vehicle and we have countless Mercedes dealerships and Compustar dealers installing this specific product"

For those not familiar with DroneMobile, it's the one that will let you control everything (remote start, open windows, set alarm, open trunk..) through your smartphone:
http://www.compustar.com/DroneMobile.php

All interesting stuff....just wish someone on here is using it and can provide review.

Thanks again.

Do you mean all GLKs have DEFA WarmUp? Where is it in the manual or specs?

The DEFA WarmUp is a module based PlugIn system system and consists of a cabin heater, electronic battery charger and control unit. Connected to commercial power, requirement 230VAC/ 50 – 60Hz. Block heater is a PlugIn unit, and of course normally installed.

Three versions are available: SmartStart (ours) with handheld remote control, Futura with vehicle remote control and the brand new WarmUp Link, accessible via an app on the smartphone

Assumably did you note the reference made in one of the links referred to, with regard to another remote start (only) system: MB RemoteStart.

They don't. The DEFA systems are aftermarket installations, normally done by a shop, or by the dealer as an "external" option when buying a car. We've had DEFA SmartStart systems installed in our three last cars, going the latter route.

A neighbor has a new Jeep Patriot with factory remote start. In Texas. Best used for A/C cooling before entering. A friend at work installed remote start on his Dodge truck for $90. I guess we all bought the wrong vehicles.
In western Massachusetts winters, my dad used to go outside and start his Ford flat head V-8 and then come inside for another cup of coffee. In the Stone Age. When men were Men.

No drone

I've got the drone module with smart key starter.
The drone module is a hit and miss functionality.
Save your money and only opt for the starter module only. Works well did the the vehicle is leveled only. If parked on a slope, no go on remote start.

That's good info.

Thanks for the heads up.

I have a smart start installed, works well. If you live in an area that gets below 40's its worth it.

I did a lot of research and found that Midcity Engineering makes MB specific remote starters that are plug and play with integrated rear window defroster and heated seats that come on automatically and then I added a cellular AutoConnect to it. Midcity uses the panic button on the standard remote and anything further away the wife just uses her phone with the app. Works flawlessly last winter.

Installed the Midcity Engineering system on my 2011 GLK, It was a very simple install that I was able to do in a few hours in the dead of winter in Winnipeg. I've added the Drone module as well, it works great for my purposes.

Also, be sure to attach a block heater cord if your GLK doesn't already have the cord attached, mine had never been installed. Seems to be an oversight on the part of some dealers, it should be standard operating procedure in Canada.
