OEM vs Aftermarket running boards
Considering the purchase of running boards in the future but interested in feedback from anyone who has purchased & installed the aftermarket units. At half the price of the MB pieces, what is the quality of the aftermarkets? A used set would be okay too but rarely seen for sale. Also with a used set wonder if there would be an issue with installation hardware as from my experience, the used stuff lacks it.

There is a GLK thread about aftermarket running boards and based on what this member said the quality was not very good.

Thank you for the link. I did a search earlier today & that did not show up. It sounds to me that once installed, the running boards would be a mother to remove. Probably why so few used pieces are offered.

I only know from my experience in purchasing an almost new 2011, black with running brds. I liked them originally, then thought of removing them because of the wide berth to get over in the winter. It was apparent that I would need to obtain the lower finish strips to replace where the boards covered. They no doubt would be expensive from MB, and then the paint match, etc. I've learned to 'clear' the winter slush, and glad I kept them as they 'enhance' the look of my GLK, IMHO.
best of luck....

From a looks perspective I guess they're OK but functionally unless you are really short they serve no purpose. Do you find them hard to keep clean???

i installed them on mine, and they are a challenge to get in and out of the car but you get used to it and they look great. I have aftermarket ones...they function great, and give you some piece of mind from door dingers in the prking lot.

Be careful what you wish for. There have been threads here on the MB Forum where buyers were duped into thinking the RB's they bought were great aftermarket items, they got burnt. I wish I could find the threads but as they say "Caveat Emptor".
Make sure they are a reputable seller and make sure you can return them if you don't like what you see. Probably easier said than done.

Negotiated mine in with my GLK 250 and paid $700 all in with install... they look great. Little hard to get out of since I'm 5"6 but nothing I can't get used to.

just be aware and be prepared.
my running boards turned out great, but the mud flaps have a slight gap in them that was an eye sore for weeks.

I just got a set off EBay for about $200 plus about $25 for shipping. They have to be replicas and not OEM, but I installed them yesterday and they seem great. We'll see if they last, but at the moment I have no complaints. It probably took me about an hour to install each side with minimal tools needed...

The drilling / install is really not that bad.
The gas pedal is easily removed by (2) 13mm nuts and 1 clip and is plastic so drilling is easy. It is much easier off the vehicle.
The parking brake pedal is plastic as well so drilling is easy.
The "dead pedal" foot rest simply screws into the carpet, no drilling required.
The brake pedal is really the only "not-easy" part. It is metal and is stamped to where the holes being drilled are somewhat beveled so it can be tricky to get the hole started but still really not that difficult.
Start to finish I'd say it is an hour tops job, I think mine took about ~30-40 min after reading some threads on this forum.
