Gas filler door clicks but won't open

I just tried to gas up a little while ago and I couldn't get my filler door to open. Every time I pushed on it, it would click like it was open but it would only open about and 1/8". After numerous attempts, I used a screw driver to pry it open enough to get my fingers behind it and force it open. When it open a little round black piece broke off. I wouldn't forced it but I really needed gas. Now that the piece is, it opens and closes fine.

I attached a pic of the plastic piece. Anyone know if this piece is important and should I be concerned?

Thanks

Very very slow
It looks like a locking mechanism.
As it locked the gas filler door when you lock the car.
If you are not worry about someone stealing your gas then just ignore it.
(I noticed you have a 2010 GLK, out of warranty?.)

A gaggle of MB's
For those reading this thread - owner's manual shows how to access manual fuel filler door release from inside rear cargo cabin in the event the auto release system fails

Huh, I had that happen way back when on my 1980 300D...

I almost did that once.
I didn't realize that the gas flap locked when the doors locked. My wife had locked the doors when she got out, then I couldn't get the gas flap open. Thought something was broke.

I thought of that after the fact. I had locked the doors when I got out and was wondering if that was the cause but I could of sworn I've locked the doors before and gassed up without an issue. I rarely exit my car without immediately locking it after.

If you want to fix it you just need another lock mechanism.

It should not be a tough repair, but after reading about what it takes to change a low-beam headlight bulb I'm reluctant to make any assumptions...
