CA and WA owners -- trick to filling fuel?

We split our time six months in Arizona and six months in Washington. Just drove up to Washington. I'm having a bear of a time fueling the vehicle, particularly with being able to "lock" the dispenser so that I don't have to keep pressing it down.

I've tried a couple of different gas stations, with different pump vapor control mechanisms, but none seems to work particularly well with the GLK. The GLK gas tank has a large metal rim around the smaller fuel inlet.

Is there any "trick" that anyone has figured out to pump gas more easily?

I haven't had any problems with "locking" the trigger when filling up gas. I've filled up gas in California, Nevada, and Arizona without any issues. Mainly fill up at the tier 1 gas stations like Costco, Cheveron, Shell, etc.

Not sure what the problem could be.

I live in L.A. and have no problem filling up our GLK...

OK, I feel like a goof. I put the nozzle in, press the handle, and if I press too hard, it immediately kicks off. Shell and Chevron, for instance, have that accordian-style thing around the pump nozzle to trap vapors.

Do you guys just put the pump in, don't worry about how that thing lines up with the tank, and you're good? Or ?

I've filled mine up in NorCal and SoCal, never had a problem. It doesn't need to "seal" like the gas cars do. It just kind of sits in there.

Oops totally missed that, sorry! I did have problems with my C250 with it locking in. It'd click off randomly, and if you tried to push it a little harder to get it to lock in it'd just click off. The one trick given to me by the dealer was to actually push down after you put it in. It helps to lock it in and seal it.

So, put it in, push down, and then press the lever to dispense gas?

Yes, in, and then push sort of in and down so it's locked in as low as it can go. I will tell you that for some reason I did always have issues at certain stations. The dealership taught me that trick and it helped a lot.

I fill at a variety of stations in California - many times Costco, and the pumps have the large Healy handle with the bellows and a funnel like seal at all of them.
It is a nightmare. I have to hold it open at a minimum fill rate and hope it doesn't click off. it still does 2 or 3 times causing me to overfill because I'm never sure if it really means it when it clicks off. I hold it high, I hold it low. I hold it in all the way and sometimes just past the little gate. No joy. What a PITA!

If the pump constantly clicks off, i do the opposite: put it in as far as it goes and pull it back up to an inch. Works every time.

Hey Mike - had kinda similar experiences with those pesky DESEAL pump nozzles. Then one day I filled up at a BRAND NEW (3rd customer!!first Diesel customer!!) @ a SAM's Club Fuel store...... and started talking to the station attendant said> quote "MOST DESEAL nozzles gets abused big time by 'big truck guys' who couldn't care less about things .....where as 'petrol' is mostly gentle ladies and guys with pimped up cars who don't want a drop get away...." Diesel nozzles don't have to deal with VOC blow-back which petrol does - so the Auto-shut off normally don't work as well . that's why you get so many more DESEAL SPILLS at pumps - thus the NOTICE".....< end quote

So I go >> how to know all these Teckie stuff? - > I am the NATIONAL TRAINER for SAMs CLUB GAS ATTENDANT staff - ex Mobil DESEAL Technical GURU for BIG RIGS
<impressed>
When driving a "petrol car' & as most guys do a- SELF_FILL than when you change to a DIESEL ---- yip bugs me when the pump don't 'click-off'.... that's why most all DIESEL PUMPS have a notice saying.... " Spill diesel and you pay for $xxxx for CLEAN UP by XXX environment Company"

BTW = who else hates that SMELL of the newer diesel composition!!! where is that PINK Diesel of the past <lol>!!!

Every pump in NYC that is self service doesn't have the thing to keep the trigger down. You're supposed to stand there holding the handle. It also reduces on pump fires, as letting go and getting back in your car or brushing your clothes against the car can create static that then could be released near the gas cap as you go to pull it out, resulting in a spark and fire. Plenty of Youtube videos illustrating this.

CA gas nozzles work best if you don't set them on full flow.

And no, that accordion thing doesn't need to be lined up perfectly but it does need to be pressed in at least a little bit.
