New Slotted Rotors & Painted Calipers

It was time to replace the pads & rotors. So decided to use StopTech SportStop Slotted Rotors & EBC Redstuff pads. Since the calipers were coming off, had them cleaned and painted black. Used The G2 Brake Caliper paint system, it is a 2 part product hardens to a nice gloss.

Appearance is much better than the rusty stock setup. Very clean and elegant now.

Performance is greatly improved over stock as well. You barely have to breathe on the pedal and starts to scrub speed quick.

I have attached pics.

I did recently mine with drilled rotors; they are zinc plated so they also look vastly better than the rusty OEMs.

Didn't bother painting the calipers but gave them a good cleaning so it all looks nice; I'll try to post a picture at some point.

The hub on these rotors are black also. Hard to see in the pic.

Sounds great - but how is the dusting level?

I noticed some dust first day or so, but had washed the car 2 days ago and have not seen any accumulation since.

pics of the wheels today, 2 days after washing. No noticeable dust.

Also, happened to be parked next to a Ferrari, so had to include a pic of that too.

Two shots; one shows the rotors better, the other shows the (unpainted) caliper.

In was thinking of painting the calipers but when I was doing some research online I came across the statement, "Painted OEM calipers look lame" and I had to agree...

Your setup does look good, however, the problem with unpainted calipers on the GLK is that a in a few months it will revert back to its naturally rusty state. I went with black because I have a black car, otherwise I would have went with silver. I painted them so I won't have get upset everytime I walk up to the car and see rust. As another member mentioned in another section, this is merely a necessity for keeping a properly detailed car.

Also, I did stay away from drilled rotors because of the high probability of cracking.

Thanks.

My calipers didn't have any rust, just the usual dirt and grime which I cleaned. Black paint would have looked ok, but what I really want is a set of Brembos (just don't want to spend the $).

What was rusty was the center of the rotor, so I really like the zinc coating on the new ones. BTW, one of them was so rusty I couldn't get it off the hub until I remembered an old trick; I screwed one of the caliper bolts into the mounting hole (with the caliper off) until it touched the rotor and with a few turns off it popped.

The rotors also have deep chamfering so I think they will be OK as far as cracking goes...

So I took the plunge and tried out the Redstuff pads. In my opinion, the braking was no better than with the Akebono Euro pads I had there before. However, the dust level was abhorrent, almost as bad as the OEM pads. Here is how the wheels looked after a couple of weeks. In contrast, I had near zero dusting with the Akebonos. So back to Akebonos I go .

Im going to have mine painted this summer. I was not impressed with these brakes. My C350 have cross drilled rotors and nice calipers with MB on them and the GLK look like the cheapest calipers.

I thought I just read somewhere you have 27k miles? Isn't early for new brakes?

I'm at 52k miles and my brake pads look the same as 5 years ago...rotors not so much.

nice mods. always nice for the oem+ looks. but painting calipers is sorta a waste. but i like that you just did black to clean it up and anything looks better than OEM rust LOL

I was actually at 22.5k miles when I did this and I was not happy about it.

There have been several threads here about this; apparantly MB uses fairly soft rotors, at least on some of their cars, since my experience was not unique.

Of course, the pads needed replacing, too.

52K miles, huh? I'm jealous...

Yea I read about that rotors wearing out before the pads in some cases.
I haven't had chance to measure what I have left on the rotor. I would not be surprized if the rotors are shot, they look pretty bad after almost 6 years and 52k miles. Yea, 52k miles, I'm not sure what they make pads out of.

EDIT: I never did B service, which is A service plus tire rotation and brake inspection at my dealer, so dealer never had a chance to tell me if my rotors needed replacement.

OT...Have you done or thought of doing the coolant flush yet?
