Aftermarket GPS
So I just picked up a 2012 glk350, it doesn't have the tech package, but it has all the other stuff I wanted. I'm wondering, can I install a Pioneer AVIC-8100 Nex in a glk? Haven't really seen anyone do it before, worried about compatibility. Cheers.

Here you go with full compatibility

Use the GPS on your phone. It will have more and better features with more frequent free updates and is a better all around solution.
In dash GPS is not worth the hassle and cannot keep up with any of the competitors.

Plus these unit run IGO8 (Primo), which can be customized and IMO is better than the graphics on a cell phone.

Still doesn't beat the larger screen plus the the nav voice coming through the speakers and hearing it clearly than trying to listen to the voice via cell phone speaker.

To me, phone based navigation is not as good as a standalone TomTom or Garmin. I connect my phone via bluetooth, and having the voice through the speakers is nice, but still use a GPS most times because they are reliable.

The navigation on the GLK is nice. But google maps or Waze app is better IMO. If you are worried about the size of a phone screen, get an iPad or iPad mini and pair it with your phone. The traffic updates and police locations on Waze far exceeds the built in Navi. I also do the same on my A6 it has one of the best navigations, but not as good as third party phone apps. I use Waze on my iPad for my A6 since my car has a built in LTE wifi hot spot.

We use a Garmin 2595 with lifetime map and software upgrades. Total cost about $150. Sits on dash on beanbag mount. Works perfectly and can be removed when not needed.
Any nav system that is installed as part of car, will eventually be obsolete. Remember those early analog car phones?

If You don't want to do any mods, get a big Garmin like this :
https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/on-t...rod154718.html
or TomTom if you prefer that, and you'll be good to go.
Cheap, easy to upgrade ( or replace ), will do the job just fine, no mods needed.
I did that, when I purchased my first SUV (another German one) , as the navi-package from factory was more than 1500$, with that money I could have purchased 5 Garmins.
Our GLK has built in Navi, so now we use that as it was there when we bought the car.
