Exclamation How critical is 40k transmission service on time?

I'm a total doofus. I've been doing my own service on my cars for years. Mostly Volvo, Jeep and Ford. We just got this 2010 GLK350 about a year ago with roughly 30k miles on it. I got the alert for the 40k service, did all the items except for the transmission. I thought, based on every other car I've owned, that 40k was too soon for flush and filter change. I was going to do some research on it, but it slipped off my radar and I forgot about it. My wife works about ah hour drive from home, so the 50k just came up. It was then that I realized that I forgot about the transmission.

My question is, how critical is it to get it done right at 40k? Could I have done some major damage in there? Nearly all the driving in this vehicle is highway, so it's constant, steady high speed kind of stuff. It still seems to be working fantastically, but we're leaving for a ~3k mile drive for Christmas vacation, and I don't have time to get it serviced before we leave on Sunday. Is this critical enough that I should try to get this done while we're out of town (after ~1500 miles), or wait til we get home? I've already schedule the service with our local MB dealership on the Monday we get back, just in case.

Thanks for your help!

Mike

A gaggle of MB's
Why worry - it's about a 2hr service - call a convenient MB dealer while on the road and you can get it done

Good point... I've scheduled a service with the MB dealer in Des Moines. They don't have the price on their web site. Hopefully, it's the same as it is here... $459.95.

Thanks!

Shoot... I just got a call back from the MB dealership in Des Moines. It's $560 there. Oh well... I suppose it's worth 100 bucks extra to get it down about 1600 miles sooner, eh?

From what I've been reading here, that sounds like a reasonable price, right?

Okay, I've been doing some more research in the forums here, and now that $560 seems pretty high. But I guess since it's about 14000 miles overdue... I better take what I can get. I'll find a more reasonable place here in town once we get back home. Merry Christmas to Mercedes-Benz, I guess...

Make sure they do a TC flush as well.

I paid $550 at an indie shop that only works on MB. Seems too expensive too me, but I want my warranty honored. I got mine done at 41,500 miles, along with new rotors/pads all the way around and a brake fluid flush, for just under $1,900 out the door.

Almost $1350.00 to replace brake rotors, pads and change brake fluid? Yikes!

From other post it appears the 40k trans flush is something you do not want to skip. One of the most mentioned items on the BB is trans problems that may have been avoided by regular service. That being said, it appears there are some plastic parts that are the main cause and one wonders how a transmission flush would have saved them.

Thanks for your replies! I'll definitely make sure they get the transfer case. In fact, I'm going to ask them exactly what they'll be doing for this service. And yes, I'll also definitely be hitting this service on time from now on!

Well, done and done. From the invoice, it looks like they replaced everything that I would have, except for the overflow plug. I don't see one on there, so assuming that the same one is still in place. That seems odd to me, but no big deal, I guess.

No, mine is just the basic rear wheel drive. So, no TC flush needed... ;-)

There's no transfer case flush needed on the GLK per the service manual. Just the automatic transmission. The only mention of a transfer case is in the G class.

Yeah, that was mostly in response to shotgun_banjo's post from a couple weeks back telling me to have them flush the TC.

I emailed my technician and he said they do a full xfer case and differential service at 100,000 miles. I'm thinking I might go ahead and get that done at 50k so they can inspect some of those parts that are known to fail and try to get them handled under warranty.

I'm assuming that the shotgun_banjo meant torque converter by "TC", not transfer case.
