Replacement of the brake pad sensor mandatory?

Basically, if the wear sensor hasn't triggered a warning yet, can I re-use them upon replacing the brake pads?

Theoretically, yes. In practice, they are quite fragile, and when removing/reinstalling, they can break and end up triggering a false warning immediately or at some point in the future.

Factory says replace them every time they are removed. I have changed pads that were barely worn under warranty for noise concerns or whatever, and you always put a new sensor in.

Sure you can reuse it, but as Itallian Joe1 said "they can break" That has happened to me only once although I have reused them many times. At the less than $4 cost, why would you want not to replace it? After that one failure I will replace them every time.

I was just wondering, given that A) I have to go buy them at the stealership and B) they will likely charge way more than 4$ here...

Even at full pop from the dealer they are under $20. Buy them online if you aren't in a rush.

Paid $9.50 for the sensor @ the dealership because I needed it asap.

Price online is obviously less - amazon.com @ 6.99 each but not sure if this is OEM.

Ok, so less than 10$ apiece at the dealership. Not bad.
