2013 GLK 350 engine failure from oil filter?
Hey guys,
So i got my oil change with at a local shop near my house, and i provided the genuine mercedes oil filter 000 180 26 09 i got from amazon and mobil 1 synthetic oil. I get a check engine light the same day from the oil change and was told by the shop i would have to visit mercedes, which i did. The service advisor tells me i need a new engine because the oil filter was the wrong part which caused internal damage due to the oil filter sucking up too much oil and parts of the engine was not lubricated enough.
I think this guy is full of ****. Any thoughts?

I'm just giving my opinion, I'm not a Mercedes oil pro. It sounds wrong. The specification on filter oil flow, bypass valve, filtering ability minimum in microns are all similar. What filter and oil did you use, do you have the filter. Is it a cartridge that you insert into the housing on top? So there isn't much that you should have been able to affect, just my opinion. How long and what is your driving style. What failed, how many miles? Was it consuming or burning oil.

Were you with the vehicle the whole time? Was it drained or pumped out? Could they have left the drain plug loose and it fell out? Was oil low or not visible on the stick ? Look at the pan for signs of oil. It has happened often to get a loose oil plug from oil change places

After researching on google, a wrong oil filter can cause engine internal issues. So now i am a bit worried. I am contacting the seller of the oil filter on wtf kind of filter they sent me etc. Also, going to see if the filter installed on the car is the one i provided the local shop.

I have a 2013 glk 350 49000, 0-40 Mobil is recommended , I have an extra filter in the garage, it's just a paper filter with no bypass valve, the Bypass valve is internal on mine ( not inside the filter) and is your safety feature from a clogged filter or totally thick sludge you can get at -20f with full throttle. The Bypass Valve bypasses the filter when pressure is to high, so the motor has oil. That situation can happen with old oil, real cold conditions, with full throttle. I don't feel it's possible you put in a filter that would stop the oil, and if you did the Bypass valve would have done its job. Those filters are pleated paper, only a few manufacturers make them and flow similar amounts of oil, if it's MB. I would think the guy loosened the drain plug and didn't tighten it. Have a pro check oil plug for being new, scratched, oil spray under the back area. Can you post a photo of the filter? Was your car out of your view when the oil shop checked it? Oil starvation just does not sound right. Dropping something into the oil filter housing is a real possibility. Are you sure they actually put oil in it? And how much? This is strange. Sorry to hear about it but the guy who worked on it will first blame you. You need someone good to figure it out by looking at it.

link to the product. So after looking at it more closely this was a MANN filter in a mercedes box????????? Assuming the part number 000 180 26 09 is also for MANN filter part number?

the correct filter for my car is 276 180 00 09 and the part i got from amazon was 000 180 26 09. It said it was a correct fit for my car so clearly something is up... Either my car didnt like the part or the part was fine & something else happened...

right? even if the wrong filter was stuffed in there, and something was jammed up, you'd think the bypass would work, and possibly get a CEL. its kind of idiot proof.

UPDATE**
The CEL was on when I picked up the same day (dropped it off early 9am and picked up at 6pm.) The shop was closed by the time I had went there to pick up the car so I could not get the CEL code.
Anyway, I declined the stealership's suggestion and had it towed to my family friend's Euro car shop by GEICO for free. The tech there could not believe that the dealership suggested that I need a new engine. He said the oil filter on the car was correct and nothing wrong there... He could not make out what the issue was probably because the CEL was reset. He said they would check for codes again etc... They will get back to me tomorrow
BUT THEY DEF SAID I DO NOT NEED A NEW MOTOR... Hopefully it is true...

Before you accept statements that your " wrong filter" did anything wrong, you need to understand and research what you put in, is most likely of the same material and charistics in , oil flow , micron filtering ability , and all parameters, except a few, and aftermarket are much different . And none of this is your issue. If they put in oil, the Oil Bypass Circuit would have keep the motor alive and fine. Even with the oil filter as a block of wood you could not kill the motor for years. All you would do is not filter the oil! And you have nearly 2 gallons of great stuff! I'm 60, I've been pulling apart motors since 1968, and no oil filter is today acceptable in small motors ! Motors that last thousands of hours. Think any small motor. So you have a claim! Just pay somebody good to figure this sad story out and don't believe your oil change guy, or anyone till you find the full truth. I'll help.

First of all, you can't rely on retailers to accurately list interchangeable part numbers. As time passes, cars evolve and improve. There are tons of parted lists incorrectly on place like Amazon for prior generations. Ask me how I know.
A wrong filter would not cause immediate engine damage. Improper oil change procedures will.
Things like removing all prior oil with a strong oil extractor, replacing all seals, adding the correct not max not minimum oil amount, changing oil at intervals, and using the correct oil grade needs to be taken into account.
Also be careful of places that offer "synthetic blend oil", keyword is blend. It is not fully synthetic oil.

Even no filter or a block of wood In place of the filter would really affect a motor in one day of city driving . Racing yes. But to ruin a motor or show "check engine light " no, that's is not filter related, in my opinion. NO oil would cause your issues. And nothing else.

Same issue on our '12 ML350...
Stealership said our "near" engine failure was due to a wrong oil filter as well.
$4200 worth of damage that I actually believe was due to a failed timing belt tensioner...
I had them give me the suspect oil filter and took it back to my friend's shop who did the oil change in question and we pulled it up.... it was an oem filter.
Stealership just threw that out there as an excuse for not knowing what the problem was and figured I would buy it.
I'm to blame for actually letting my wife take the car into the stealership.
